Pesticide/herbicide intermediate

Cyanamide is used in the production of synthetic rubber, cyanide, fumigants, and metal cleaners. It has also found use as an intermediate for pesticides, herbicides, detergents, medicines (e.g., antihistamines, hypertension, sedatives), in the photography industry, as an additive for fuels, lubricants, and cements, and as a paper preservative. The dimer (dicyandiamide) is a raw material for melamine and guanidine. 

Phosgene is widely used as a chemical intermediate. It is used in metallurgy and in the production of pesticides, herbicides, and many other compounds. It is a by-product of chloroform biotransformation and can be generated from some chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents under intense heats. Phosgene has been used as a chemical warfare agent. 

This is used as an intermediate in flavor and fragrance and pharmaceutical industry. Also is used as a pesticide/herbicide herbicide intermediate. 

Esters, especially methyl esters, can also be used as feedstock. The product ketones are useful as solvents for elastomers, polyvinyl acetate and other plastics, as extraction solvents, and as intermediates in making pesticides, herbicides, and pharmaceuticals. For many of the commercial products, acetic acid is one of the reactants. Certain aldehydes can also be condensed catalytically (acid/aldehyde or aldehyde/aldehyde) to give ketones.

Historically, the discovery of one effective herbicide has led quickly to the preparation and screening of a family of imitative chemicals (3). Herbicide developers have traditionally used combinations of experience, art-based approaches, and intuitive appHcations of classical stmcture—activity relationships to imitate, increase, or make more selective the activity of the parent compound. This trial-and-error process depends on the costs and availabiUties of appropriate starting materials, ease of synthesis of usually inactive intermediates, and alterations of parent compound chemical properties by stepwise addition of substituents that have been effective in the development of other pesticides, eg, halogens or substituted amino groups. The reason a particular imitative compound works is seldom understood, and other pesticidal appHcations are not readily predictable. Novices in this traditional, quite random, process requite several years of training and experience in order to function productively. 

Naphthalenesulfonic acid can be converted to l-naphthalenethiol/T25 -J6 - by reduction of the related sulfonyl chloride this product has some utihty as a dye intermediate, and is converted by reaction with alkyl isocyanates to 3 -naphthyl-A/-alkylthiocarbamates, which have pesticidal and herbicidal...

It is a chemical intermediate for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and other organic chemicals.
