Industrial uses make up most of the market for cyanamide. Calcium cyanamide is used directly for steel nitridation (34) and to some extent for desulfurization (36) (see Steel). Cyanamide is used to produce cationic starch (36) and calcium cyanide. Cyanamide is, of course, the raw material for dicyandiamide and melamine. New uses include intermediates for pesticides, detergents (37), medicines such as antihistamines, hypertension, sedatives, contraceptives, etc (38), the photography industry (39), as an additive for fuels and lubricants, as a paper preservative, and as a cement additive. [Pg.370]

Recrystallized sodium azide (12 g.) is dissolved in 50 ml. of water, and 12 ml. of carbon disulfide is added. The mixture is placed in a small flask fitted with a reflux condenser and kept at a temperature of about 40°C. for approximately 48 hours. If carbon disulfide is lost by volatilization, more is added from time to time. The resulting solution of sodium azidodithiocarbonate is filtered, chilled in an ice bath, and treated with chilled concentrated hydrochloric acid. The white, crystalline precipitate is washed twice by decantation with ice water, separated by filtration on a Buchner funnel, dried on a porous plate or between filter paper, preserved in a desiccator protected from the light, and kept at a temperature below 10°C. (In this way, azidodithiocarbonic acid may be kept for 24 to 48 hours without appreciable decomposition.)... [Pg.82]

Cyanamide is used in the production of synthetic rubber, cyanide, fumigants, and metal cleaners. It has also found use as an intermediate for pesticides, herbicides, detergents, medicines (e.g., antihistamines, hypertension, sedatives), in the photography industry, as an additive for fuels, lubricants, and cements, and as a paper preservative. The dimer (dicyandiamide) is a raw material for melamine and guanidine. [Pg.695]

Ans. Only rotation 180° in the plane of the paper preserves the correct spatial arrangements of bonds—horizontal bonds coming forward and vertical bonds going backward. Rotation 180° out of the plane of the paper as well as rotation 90° or 270° in the plane of the paper reverses those spatial arrangements and this does not allow a valid comparison with the other structural drawing. [Pg.337]

Wei T o Associates, developers of a nonaqueous liquid deacidification process, derives its name from an ancient Qiinese god regarded as the protector of books. The National Archives of Canada operated a treatment facility in Ottawa with a capacity of about 40000 books per year until 2002. The process is based on the work conducted by Richard D. Smith, a graduate student at the University of Chicago in the mid-1960s. In 1989, Union Carbide acquired the exclusive rights of the process and intend to market the technique as part of a paper preservation service unit... [Pg.484]
