The present procedure is substantially simpler and quicker than the best previous procedure,3 which requires 4 days instead of 4 hours. It is also safer, for no explosions have been encountered with the present procedure, even on a 1.2-mole scale,3 whereas care must be taken to prevent explosion of the intermediate hypobromite when the Hunsdiecker method is used,3 and one detonation has been reported. Antioxidant capacities of common individual curcuminoids were determined in vitro by phosphomolybdenum and linoleic acid peroxidation methods. Antioxidant capacities expressed as ascorbic acid equivalents (pmol/g) were 3099 for curcumin, 2833 for demethoxycurcumin, and 2677 for bisdemethoxycurcumin at concentrations of 50 ppm. The same order of antioxidant activity (curcumin > demethoxycurcumin > bisdemethoxycurcumin) was observed when compared with BHT (buty-lated hydroxyl toluene) in linoleic peroxidation tests. The antioxidant activity of curcumin in the presence of ethyl linoleate was demonstrated and six reaction products were identified and structurally characterized. The mechanism proposed for this activity consisted of an oxidative coupling reaction at the 3 position of the curcumin with the lipid and a subsequent intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction. ... [Pg.333]

It has been known for decades that the peroxides formed on the irradiated polymers (by y-ray. X-ray, electron beams, etc.) can be utilized in graft copolymerization of various monomers. This method is known as the peroxide method of radiation copolymerization [27]. The trunk polymer is first irradiated by ionizing radiation in a vacuum or in an inert gas environment. The irradiated polymer is exposed to air or oxygen to convert free radicals to peroxides. Thus created peroxides-containing polymers were used as the initiator of the free radical polymerization of the second monomer.
