Performance tendency

The question of whether the performance tendency results as a product of expectations and value or of probability and usefulness played a relatively important role in this connection. This question led to some stimulating numbers games (Edwards, 1968), but no conclusions could be arrived at this is no surprise, because if probability is not appropriate as a basis for decision-making in hazardous situations, the relative importance of incentives, measured in termsof expectations, cannot serve as a basis from which one can, in the usual manner, determine the intention of performance. The solution of this problem would be relatively simple if readiness to perform depended only on the evaluation of the consequences, as is, according to Jungermamnn (1982), the case for risk perception among lay persons. [Pg.100]

The tests in the two previous paragraphs are often used because they are easy to perform. They are, however, limited due to their neglect of intermolecular interactions. Testing the effect of intennolecular interactions requires much more intensive simulations. These would be simulations of the bulk materials, which include many polymer strands and often periodic boundary conditions. To be able to systematically identify opportunities for reducing human error, it is useful to ask the question, What is human error One definition is that human error is an inappropriate or undesirable human decision or behavior that reduces, or has the potential for reducing safety or system performance (Rasmusssen 1979). There is a tendency to view errors as operator errors. However, the error may result from inadequate management, design, or maintenance of the system. This broader view which encompasses the whole system can help provide opportunities for instituting measures to reduce the likelihood of errors. [Pg.127]

Proper condensed phase simulations require that the non-bond interactions between different portions of the system under study be properly balanced. In biomolecular simulations this balance must occur between the solvent-solvent (e.g., water-water), solvent-solute (e.g., water-protein), and solute-solute (e.g., protein intramolecular) interactions [18,21]. Having such a balance is essential for proper partitioning of molecules or parts of molecules in different environments. For example, if the solvent-solute interaction of a glutamine side chain were overestimated, there would be a tendency for the side chain to move into and interact with the solvent. The first step in obtaining this balance is the treatment of the solvent-solvent interactions.
