Tracing of lines

In operating a coohng tower in the thermocycle or free-cooling mode, some precautions are necessary to minimize icing problems. These include fan reversals to circulate air down through the tower inlet louvers, proper water distribution, constant water flow over the tower, heat tracing of lines such as makeup lines as required, and maximum loading per tower cell. [Pg.1168]

Uquidus curve The freezing point of a molten mixture of substances varies with the composition of the mixture. If the freezing points are plotted as a function of the composition, the line joining the points is called a liquidus curve. Such mixtures usually freeze over a range of temperature. If the temperature at which the last traces of liquid just solidify (assuming that sufficient time has been allowed for equilibrium to be established) are plotted against composition the resulting line is called a solidus curve. [Pg.241]

Acryflc acid, alcohol, and the catalyst, eg, sulfuric acid, together with the recycle streams are fed to the glass-lined ester reactor fitted with an external reboiler and a distillation column. Acrylate ester, excess alcohol, and water of esterification are taken overhead from the distillation column. The process is operated to give only traces of acryflc acid in the distillate. The bulk of the organic distillate is sent to the wash column for removal of alcohol and acryflc acid a portion is returned to the top of the distillation column. Storage. Phenol is shipped in dmms, tank tmcks, and tank cars. It is loaded and shipped at elevated temperatures as a bulk Hquid. In storage, phenol may acquire a yeUow, pink, or brown discoloration which makes it unusable for some purposes. The discoloration is promoted by the action of water, light, air, and catalysts, eg, traces of iron or copper. When stored as a solid in the original dmm or in nickel, glass-lined, or tanks lined with baked phenolic resin, phenol remains colorless for a number of weeks. [Pg.290]

Sodium is identified by the intense yellow color that sodium compounds impart to a flame or spectroscopically by the characteristic sodium lines. The latter test is extremely sensitive, yet because many materials contain traces of sodium salts as impurities, it is not conclusive evidence of the presence of sodium in any considerable quantity. [Pg.168]

The dashed lines ia Figure 4 are plots of equation 22 for Cu " and Mn and iadicate the concentration of the aquo metal ions ia equiUbrium with the sohd hydroxides as function of pH. At any pH where the soHd curve is above the dashed line for the same metal, the EDTA is holding the unchelated metal ion concentration at a value too low for the precipitation of the sohd hydroxide. Relatively large quantities of the metal can thus be maintained ia solution as the chelate at pH values where otherwise all but trace quantities of the metal would be precipitated. In Eigure 4, this corresponds to pH values where pM of the dashed curves is 4 or greater. At the pH of iatersection of the sohd and dashed lines for the same metal, the free metal ion is ia equihbrium with both the sohd hydroxide and the chelate. At higher pH the hydroxyl ion competes more effectively than the chelant for the metal, and only a trace of either the chelate or the aquo metal ion can exist ia solution. Storage. Purified and dry aHyl chloride can be safely stored in carbon steel vessels. Use of lined vessels is recommended if slight discoloration or trace presence of metals is undesirable for its intended use. In any event, the presence of air should be avoided for safety (flammabHity) reasons through the use of an inert gas pad. Tank vents should be treated, eg, by incineration, prior to venting to the atmosphere. Some commercial producers intentionaHy add about 0.1% propylene oxide as a stabilizer to prevent discoloration however, this is usuaHy unnecessary if product purity is sufficiently high. [Pg.34]

Corrosion products and deposits. All sulfate reducers produce metal sulfides as corrosion products. Sulfide usually lines pits or is entrapped in material just above the pit surface. When freshly corroded surfaces are exposed to hydrochloric acid, the rotten-egg odor of hydrogen sulfide is easily detected. Rapid, spontaneous decomposition of metal sulfides occurs after sample removal, as water vapor in the air adsorbs onto metal surfaces and reacts with the metal sulfide. The metal sulfides are slowly converted to hydrogen sulfide gas, eventually removing all traces of sulfide (Fig. 6.11). Therefore, only freshly corroded surfaces contain appreciable sulfide. More sensitive spot tests using sodium azide are often successful at detecting metal sulfides at very low concentrations on surfaces. [Pg.134]

Styrene is difficult to purify and keep pure. Usually contains added inhibitors (such as a trace of hydroquinone). Washed with aqueous NaOH to remove inhibitors (e.g. rert-butanol), then with water, dried for several hours with MgS04 and distd at 25° under reduced pressure in the presence of an inhibitor (such as 0.005% p-tert-butylcatechol). It can be stored at -78°. It can also be stored and kept anhydrous with Linde type 5A molecular sieves, CaH2, CaS04, BaO or sodium, being fractionally distd, and distd in a vacuum line just before use.
