Performance Measure Framework

A suggested methodology for implementing performance measures can be established following the development of three tiers consisting of 1) Mission and Vision, 

2) Safety Objectives, and 3) Performance Measures (United States Department of Energy, Hanford Site 2001). 

A mission statement communicates the broad goals and the organization s commitment to safety, to employees, and to the public. A common theme found in safety policy statements is that of ongoing safety performance assessment and improvement. It is through the safety policy statement that an organization establishes the safety climate. 

An alternative framework for thinking about and creating performance measures is to divide them into three categories key objectives, outcome measures, and activity measures (Leandri 2001,39). 

1) Key objectives are goals that say what a company expects from the safety program. They are big company goals that are inspirational and motivational in nature. Key objectives can be the organization s overall safety mission.

Balanced score card (BSC) assimilates perspectives of finance, customer, internal business processes and learning and growth (Kaplan and Norton 1992) and presents a holistic performance measure framework. Bigliardi and Bottani (2010) have used it for performance measurement of food supply chain.

The dendrimer framework also plays an important role. The catalytic performance measured by activity, selectivity, stability, and recyclability depends on the dendritic architecture, and it is important to distinguish periphery-functionalized, core-functionalized, and focal point-functionalized dendrimers (Fig. 1). Periphery-functionalized dendrimers have catalytic groups located at the surface where they are directly available to the substrate. In contrast, when a dendrimer is functionalized at its core, the substrate has to penetrate the dendrimer support before it reaches the active center, and this transport process can limit the rate of a catalytic reaction if large and congested dendrimers are involved. 

The reporting process also enabled us to take inventory of our performance measures, our current sustainability initiatives, and our strategic framework for continuous improvement in corporate transparency. 

The primary performance measures of a ligand-binding assay are bias/trueness and precision. These measures along with the total error are then used to derive and evaluate several other performance characteristics such as sensitivity (LLOQ), dynamic range, and dilutional linearity. Estimation of the primary performance measures (bias, precision, and total error) requires relevant data to be generated from a number of independent runs (also termed as experiments or assay s). Within each run, a number of concentration levels of the analyte of interest are tested with two or more replicates at each level. The primary performance measures are estimated independently at each level of the analyte concentration. This is carried out within the framework of the analysis of variance (ANOVA) model with the experimental runs included as a random effect [23]. Additional terms such as analyst, instmment, etc., may be included in this model depending on the design of the experiment. This ANOVA model allows us to estimate the overall mean of the calculated concentrations and the relevant variance components such as the within-run variance and the between-run variance. 

Figure 20 provides some illustrative examples of financial and nonfinandal measures for a large management consulting firm, using the measurement framework shown in Figure 19. The performance measures are designed to provide feedback regarding implementation of strategic initiatives.

As mentioned above, Cho and Wysk (1993) utilized the multilayer perceptron to take the place of the knowledge-based system in selecting candidate scheduling rules. In their proposed framework, the neural network will output a goodness index for each rule based on the system attributes and a performance measure. Sim et al. (1994) used an expert neural network for the job shop scheduling problem. In their approach, an expert system will activate one of 16 subnetworks based on whether the attribute corresponding to the node (scheduling rules, arrival rate factor, and criterion) is applicable to the job under consideration. Then the job with the smallest output value wiU be selected to process.

A framework assists in the development of a safety performance measurement program by establishing well-defined performance measures, identifying all areas of safety performance, and documenting procedures for implementing the program.

Abstract This chapter presents a framework for sustainable operations of food supply chains. A case study approach is used. The data were collected using exploratory interviews and through a structured questionnaire. The sustainable food supply chain involves operational levers of robustness, transparency, traceability and information flow and performance measure for monitoring and control of day-to-day operations for efhciency, flexibility, responsiveness and product quality. New product development, research and development, productivity improvement, entrepreneurial orientation, quality control and conducive policy support across key stages of production, procurement, processing, distribution and consumption of the dairy supply chain emerge as key elements of the sustainable framework.
