Perfluorinated chain

New factors for tlie establislmient of multilayer stmctures are, for example, tire replacement of tire hydrocarbon chain by a perfluorinated chain and tire use of a subphase containing multivalent ions [29]. The latter can become incoriDorated into an LB film during deposition. The amount depends on tire pH of tire subphase and tire individual ion. The replacement of tire hydrocarbon by a rodlike fluorocarbon chain is one way to increase van der Waals interaction and tlierefore enlrance order and stability in molecular assemblies [431. [Pg.2615]

Ad layering (Fig. 16a). On the other hand, additional conformational entropy related to the sequenced hydrocarbon-perfluorinated chain prevents the crystallization of the aromatic parts of the molecules in the smectic layers as occurs for hydrocarbon analogues of the same tail length [4]. The stability of Cd phase in polyphilics is more delicate in nature and will be discussed below. [Pg.229]

Only a few years after the development of the homogeneous chiral Mn(salen) complexes by Jacobsen and Katsuki, several research groups began to study different immobiUzation methods in both liquid and soUd phases. Fluorinated organic solvents were the first type of Uquid supports studied for this purpose. The main problem in the appUcation of this methodology is the low solubility of the catalytic complex in the fluorous phase. Several papers were pubUshed by Pozzi and coworkers, who prepared a variety of salen ligands with perfluorinated chains in positions 3 and 5 of the saUcyUdene moiety (Fig. 2). [Pg.153]

The limitations of the system with regard to substrates and oxidants was attributed to the strong electron-withdrawing character of the perfluorinated chains and the lower steric hindrance in the position adjacent to phenols, in marked contrast to the ferf-butyl groups present in Jacobsen s catalyst, hi view of this, a second generation of fluorinated salen ligands le and If was... [Pg.153]

Further simulations on monolayers of perfluorinated chains were performed by Schmidt et al. [375,376]. Part of the stimulus for this work was x-ray results on these systems showing evidence for azimuthal ordering in these systems—in other words, the possibility of the monolayer analog of rotator transitions, which are well known in bulk alka-... [Pg.127]

Aldehydes may be converted to carboxylic acids using Ni(acac)2 immobilized in [bmim][PF,5], with oxygen as the oxidant, as shown in Scheme 9.14 [27], A similar reaction has also been performed using perfluorinated solvents, and it was found that there was little difference between the two systems [28], However, the Ni(acac)2 catalyst could not be used directly in the fluorous solvent and therefore the 1,3-diketonate was modified with long perfluorinated chains prior to use to ensure solubility. [Pg.190]

From our cooperation partners. Profs. Gladysz and Dinjus, we received ligands with perfluorinated chains ( ponytails ), which show a thermomorphic solubility in organic solvents (P(et-Rf8)2(m-me-bz)) or maybe extracted with fluorous solvents (P(et-Rfs)3). P(et-Rf6)(z-pr)2 with only one perfluorinated... [Pg.31]

This fluorous effect can also be effective for the stabilisation of proteins. For example, the selective pairing of peptides which contain perfluorinated chains has been demonstrated, and perfluorinated amino acid side chains have been shown to stabilise the hydrophobic-driven folding of proteins [38,39]. [Pg.562]

Hydrogen-containing fluorinated iodoalkanes exhibit significantly different toxic behavior (Table 17), often due to their well-established alkylating properties, unless the molecule properties are dominated by the lipophilic character of longer perfluorinated chains. [Pg.48]

However, it is possible to introduce two new factors into the problem of multilayer structure, either of which can influence structure in an interesting way. It is possible to replace the ordinary hydrocarbon chain by a perfluorinated chain and it is possible to dip over a subphase containing a trivalent cation. The perfluorinated carbon chain has a helical structure which produces a chain which appears to be approximately cylindrical. The handedness of a chain is determined randomly so that an equal number of right handed and left handed molecules exist in a given batch. [Pg.69]

Beside these compounds which combine alkyl chains and perfluorinated chains at opposite ends of a cyclic unit, there are several examples of liquid crystalline materials combining a single aromatic ring with a single semiperfluorinated alkyl chain or with two or three Rp-chains in close proximity. [Pg.22]

Introduction of perfluorinated chains into the periphery of other disc-like or board-like Ji-conjugated aromatics [251, 252], such as coronene diimides [279], perylene diimides [280-282], naphthalene tetracarboxylic diimides [283-286],... [Pg.55]

Percec et al. described the self-assembly of Rp-substituted bis-dendritic benzamides, such as compounds 179a and 179b, combining a dendron decorated with perfluorinated chains and a dendron with alkyl chains. In the hexagonal columnar LC phases of these molecules the smaller alkyl chains form the centers of the columns, the aromatics are arranged in cylindrical shells surrounding the aliphatic columns, while the larger fluorinated chains form a fluorous continuum... [Pg.63]

Yoshizawa et al. synthesized new types of taper shaped molecules by attaching two or three rod-like aromatic cores to the end of the alkyl chains of 3,4-dialkoxy benzoates and 3,4,5-trialkoxy benzoates, respectively, and having a perfluorinated chain at the apex examples of such molecules are shown in Fig. 69. [Pg.85]

LC dendrimers represent an actual field in the search for new modes of organization in LC and for new applications [369,370]. Dendrimers with perfluorinated chains at the periphery have been reviewed recently [371, 372], but there are only a few examples of LC dendrimers with RF-chains (dendrons with RF-chains have already... [Pg.86]

Tetrafluoroethylene is obviously the most used monomer in telomerisation because of its good ability to polymerise (by comparison to other monomers), its low price and the properties of the obtained perfluorinated chains. Furthermore, such an olefin is symmetrical and does not lead to problems of regio-selectivity and defects in chaining. However, it is the most difficult to handle owing to its hazardous behaviour towards oxygen and pressure. [Pg.188]
