Above the water table, groundwater can also occur in perched aquifer conditions. In these instances, groundwater occurs in relatively permeable soil that is suspended over a relatively low permeability layer of limited lateral extent and thickness at some elevation above the water table. Perched groundwater occurrences are common within the vadose zone high-permeability zones overlie low-permeability zones of limited lateral extent in unconsolidated deposits. However, perched conditions can also occur within low-permeability units overlying zones of higher permeability in both unconsolidated and consolidated deposits. In the latter case, for example, a siltstone or clay stone overlies jointed and fractured bedrock such that groundwater presence reflects the inability of the water to drain at a rate that exceeds replenishment from above. [Pg.66]

Since hydrocarbon and water are immiscible fluids, free-phase recoverable LNAPL can simplistically be viewed as being perched on the capillary fringe above the actual water table with the understanding that what is being referred to as actual NAPL thickness is what one could perceive as being equivalent to the approximate thickness of that portion of the zone of hydrocarbon saturation that is considered mobile. Argillic horizons often correlate with the maximum depth of effective evapotranspiration, commonly 1-2 m. Water loss initiates the precipitation of secondary clays and oxides from solutes. Such precipitation may also be related to the loss of dissolved organic species and the de-complexation of soluble aluminum. The resulting low permeabilities further retard the downward percolation of pore water, commonly creating transient perched water tables directly above the hardpans. Finally, there is still a trapping configuration which, although quite common, is often overlooked or misunderstood, the so-called perched water-contact (Johnson et al., 1986 Weber, 1995). This occurs when a reservoir has a U-tube shape with a fault seal or a pinch-out at the closed end. The water cannot escape from this side of the U-tube resulting in different hydrocarbon-water contacts in the same reservoir. Tadpoles of the common frog have been individually tested in 35 x 27 cm polypropylene trays, containing 1 litre of water (1.5 cm depth). Six animals were tested in parallel, and the behaviour was monitored from above with a video camera. In such a case the aquifer and water table are said to be perched. Perched aquifers are usually localized. An unconfined aquifer, often called a water table aquifer or a phreatic aquifer, is bounded above by unsaturated porous media that is in contact with the overlying atmosphere.
