Peptide diagnostic agents

Cyclen peptide derivatives, (I), prepared by Hoffman (2) were capable of binding to the gastrin releasing peptide receptor. When radiolabeled with either "Tc or 188Re, they were used as therapeutic or diagnostic agents. 

AIrheumat " ketoprofen. alsactide [inn] (Hoechst 433) is a synthetic peptide, a structural corticotrophin analogue, which has been used as a diagnostic agent for adrenal insufficiency, and clinically for conditions where CORTICOSTEROID treatment is indicated. See also corticotrophin. 

Congo red (C.l. Direct red 28 direct red C.l. 22120) is an azo dye, often used as the disodium salt. It inhibits neurotoxic effects of fibrillar p-amyloid peptides (implications for treatment of Alzheimer s disease). It also inhibits replication and accumulation of the agent responsible for scrapie. It is an indicator used as a diagnostic agent for amyloidosis. It is also used to detect acute-phase serum proteins. 

PlaqueniP hydroxychloroquine, plasma thromboplastin component factor IX. plasminogen activator inhibitor (proteinase inhibitor PAI) is a peptide containing 376-379 amino acid residues, found in 3 forms. It is an ENZYME INHIBITOR actively involved in the control of haemostatic blood clotting factors. Increased levels are found in metastases it is a possible diagnostic agent and target for anticancer chemotherapy, plasmin fibrinolysin. 

Cell-Specific Targeting. Peptides that can home in on specific cell types have enormous potential both in basic research and therapeutic applications (121). Therapeutic applications include identification of specific cell surface proteins in diseased cells as diagnostic agents and gene delivery agents. 

Somatostatin receptors have a broad distribution in normal tissue as well as in a variety of human malignancies (e.g., small cell lung, brain, breast, pituitary, and endocrine pancreatic cancers). The pentapeptide, pentagastrin, has replaced natural gastrin (a heptadeca-peptide) as a diagnostic agent that stimulates gastric secretion. This pentapeptide is butyloxycarbonyl-)8-Ala-Trp-Met-Asp-Phe-NH2. It can be administered as a snuff. 

To further improve the selectivity of these cationic, amphipathic anticancer peptides, homing/targeting moieties have been attached to them.
