Pemphigoid Pemphigus

Topical corticosteroids are most useful in inflammatory dermatoses, such as eczematous dermatitis and psoriasis they may also be helpful in other skin diseases that have a prominent inflammatory component, such as autoimmune blistering diseases (e.g., bullous pemphigoid and pemphigus vulgaris) and lupus erythematosus.

Bullous pemphigus and pemphigoid with circulating pem-phigus-like autoantibodies, pemphigus foliaceus with anti-intercellular IgG antibodies, and paraneoplastic pemphigus due to interferon alfa have rarely been reported (SED-13,1095), as has extensive oral pemphigus (294). 

Cheilosis has also been reported (178). Oral lesions in patients using penicillamine may be due to pemphigus, cicatricial pemphigoid, or lichen planus, even in the absence of lesions outside the oral cavity. In 56 consecutive patients taking penicillamine, oral lichen planus was found in as many as seven (179). Penicillamine-induced cicatricial pemphigoid can be associated with oral ulcers as well as lesions of the esophagus, and stenosis can develop. 

Ulcerative lesions of the vagina can occur in patients taking penicillamine, as a manifestation of pemphigus or cicatricial pemphigoid, or following impaired collagen synthesis (SED-8, 533) (315).

In very rare cases, certain penicillins can cause pemphigus vulgaris (143) or pemphigoid-like reactions (144,145). 

PUVA can cause pemphigus vulgaris, bullous pemphigoid, and pemphigus fohaceus. In one case intermittent flares continued for 2 years after the withdrawal of PUVA (22). 

Bullous skin diseases, autoimmune. Characterized by intra-epidermal or subepidermal blisters (eg. pemphigus vulgaris, bullous pemphigoid) and highly specific autoantibodies against components of the desmosome or hemidesmosome (eg. desmoglein 3, BP 180). May be idiopathic or paraneoplastic (caused by various lymphoproliferative malignancies).
