Pearlescent properties

Mica also has pearlescent properties. It gives a pearly aspect to skin, because it has a refractive index which is different to that of air. A new generation of pearlescent pigments appeared when refined (micronized) mica dust was coated with highly refrin-gent substances such as titanium dioxide and iron oxides. These are called interferential pigments.

The brittle, silvery, shiny metal was long considered the last stable element of the Periodic Table. In 2003 it was unmasked as an extremely weak alpha emitter (half-life 20 billion years). Like thulium, there is only one isotope. Bismuth alloys have low melting points (fuses, fire sprinklers). As an additive in tiny amounts, it imparts special properties on a range of metals. Applied in electronics and optoelectronics. The oxichloride (BiOCl) gives rise to pearlescent pigments (cosmetics). As bismuth is practically nontoxic, its compounds have medical applications. The basic oxide neutralizes stomach acids. A multitalented element. Crystallizes with an impressive layering effect (see right).

Aesthetic properties, such as appearance (clear or pearlescent), viscosity, and fragrance, are perhaps more important in this product group than in any other product category discussed in this book. Development and maintenance of an adequate foam level is a performance property and also an aesthetic property in that it is noticed and evaluated by users. 

In order to understand how three distinct colors from one pigment are possible, it is first necessary to understand the optical properties of pearlescent and interference pigments and also the optical properties of absorption colorants. The manner in which these reflect light differs and this forms the basis of the three color effect.
