Stripe pattern

The same patterns, stripes and hexagons, appear in completely different physical systems and on different spatial scales. For instance, stripe patterns are observed in human fingerprints, on zebra s skin and in the visual cortex... [Pg.2]

The design must also allow the adhesive to be positioned in an appropriate pattern. Stripes and crosses are preferred so that placing the components together does not entrap air as is possible with a closed-loop pattern. [Pg.53]

Oxidized by aging in aqueous medium Rat mesenchymal stem cells (rMSC) Porous silicon patterned stripes were aged in PBS to form Si-OH sur ce. rMSC preferentially attach to flat Si, but straddled 20 pm wide porous silicon stripes with focal adhesion sites on the flat silicon, while nuclei remained over porous area Noval etal. (2012)... [Pg.26]

Also, as discussed by Lees [1], practical joint designs must take other factors into consideration. They must allow cost-effective assembly and the design must allow the adhesive to be applied in an appropriate pattern stripes and crosses are preferred so that upon placing the substrates together air entrapment does not occur, which is possible with a closed-loop pattern. Liquid or paste form adhesives may be more accurately placed if they are deposited in a... [Pg.191]

Consequently, when D /Dj exceeds the critical value, close to the bifurcation one expects to see the appearance of chemical patterns with characteristic lengtli i= In / k. Beyond the bifurcation point a band of wave numbers is unstable and the nature of the pattern selected (spots, stripes, etc.) depends on the nonlinearity and requires a more detailed analysis. Chemical Turing patterns were observed in the chlorite-iodide-malonic acid (CIMA) system in a gel reactor [M, 59 and 60]. Figure C3.6.12(a) shows an experimental CIMA Turing spot pattern [59]. [Pg.3069]

One may also observe a transition to a type of defect-mediated turbulence in this Turing system (see figure C3.6.12 (b). Here the defects divide the system into domains of spots and stripes. The defects move erratically and lead to a turbulent state characterized by exponential decay of correlations [59]. Turing bifurcations can interact with the Hopf bifurcations discussed above to give rise to very complicated spatio-temporal patterns [63, 64]. [Pg.3069]

Probability maps typically exhibit striped wave-like interference patterns. It is easy to show why striped i atterns (i.e. patterns for which, at a given time step, the site probabilities alternate between low and high values), emerge for all systems with Sc > /2. Assume that (7j t) 0, At time t -f 1 we then have... [Pg.408]

Bar code scanners, for example, exploit the directionality of a laser beam. The laser light reflects more strongly from white stripes than from black. Because of the directionality of the laser beam, the reflected laser beam faithfully mirrors the pattern of the bar code. A sensor reads these variations and converts the light pattern into an eiectronic representation of the bar code. The sensor transmits the electronic representation to a computer. [Pg.433]

A migration test was developed to simulate human exposure patterns. 5 g of rubber material was cut into 1-2 mm stripes and then immersed in 20 ml of standard test solution of artificial saliva (4.2 g NaHC03, 0.2 g K2CO3, 0.5 g NaCl, 0.03 g NaNO, ad 1000 ml with aqua dest.j. After 24 h incubation at 40 C volatile nitrosamines were determined in an aliquot and determined after destination with a standard technique (GC-TEA-method). [Pg.221]

In order to allow for more control during the evaporation, the solution can be placed in a motor-controlled sliding [ 50] or rolling apparatus [51] which uses capillary force to confine the solution between two glass surfaces. The motor determines the speed at which the solution edge is drawn over the substrate and is one of the main parameters to control patterning. Droplet, stripe and ladder patterns have been observed. [Pg.194]
