Small solid particles, present in dust and grit emissions, have very low settling velocities (Table 4.4) The collection efficiencies of simple cyclones are tlierefore, as shown in Figure 17.3, relatively low. Fabric filters, electrostatic precipitators or wet scrubbers may be required to remove particles <5 pm in size with an acceptable efficiency. Therefore the cost of pollution control inevitably increases when dealing with particle size distributions skewed towards the lower end. [Pg.528]

One of the oldest, simplest, and most efficient methods for removing solid particulate contaminants from gas streams is by filtration through fabric media. The fabric filter is capable of providing high collection efficiencies for particles as small as 0.5 pm and will remove a substantial quantity of particles as small as 0.01 pm. In its simplest form, the industrial fabric filter consists of a woven or felted fabric through which dust-laden gases are forced. A combination of factors results in the collection of particles on the fabric filters. When woven fabrics arc used, a dust cake eventually forms. This, in turn, acts predominantly as a sieving mechanism. When felted fabrics are used, the dust cake is minimal or nonc.xistent. [Pg.150]

Rotary wheel atomizers require 0.8 to 1.0 kWh/1000 L. The lateral throw of a spray wheel requires a large diameter to prevent accumulation on the wall the ratio of length to diameter of 0.5 to 1.0 is in use in such cases. The downward throw of spray nozzles permits smaller diameters but greater depths LID ratios of 4 to 5 or more are used. Spray vessel diameters of 15 m (50 ft) or more are known. Liquid/gas ratios are 0.2 to 0.3 gal/MSCF. Flue gas enters at 149°C (300°F) at a velocity of 2.44 m/s (8 ft/s). Utilization of 80 percent of the solid reagent may be approached. Residence times are 10 to 12 s. At the outlet the particles are made just dry enough to keep from sticking to the wall, and the gas is within 11 to 28°C (20 to 50°F) of saturation. The fine powder is recovered with fabric filters. In one test facility, a gas with 4000 ppm S02 had 95 percent removal with lime and 75 percent removal with limestone. [Pg.47]

An example of the first type of membrane separator is your everyday vacuum cleaner. Vacuum cleaners work by taking in air laden with dust from your carpet. A filter inside the vacuum then traps the dust particles (which are relatively large) and allows the air to pass through it (since air particles are relatively small). A larger-scale operation that works on the same principle is called a fabric filter or "Baghouse", which is used in air pollution control or other applications where a solid must be removed from a gas. [Pg.171]
