Parameters for Scale-up

A combination of dimensional similitude and the mathematical modeling technique can be useful when the reactor system and the processes make the mathematical description of the system impossible. This combined method enables some of the critical parameters for scale-up to be specified, and it may be possible to characterize the underlying rate of processes quantitatively. 

Thus, the ratios of the various forces occurring in mixing vessels can be expressed as the above dimensionless groups which, in turn, serve as similarity parameters for scale-up of mixing equipment. It can be shown that the existence of geometric and dynamic similarities also ensures kinematic similarity. 

Parameters for Scale-Up Before simulation equations can be used, the parameter matrices S and B must be back-calculated from experimental data, which turns out to be difficult. One reason is that S and B occur as a product, so they are to some extent indeterminate errors in one tend to be compensated by the other. Also, the number of parameters is larger than the number of data values from a single size-distribution measurement but this is overcome by using data from grinding tests at a series of grinding times. This should be done anyway, since the empirical parameters should be determined to be valid over the experimental range of grinding times. 

The equation allows for modeling the coating process and predicting process conditions. Table 12 displays the parameters for scale-up that was performed in the lab to evaluate process conditions for a launch site.
