Parallel temperature control

Vehicle tests are considered the ultimate in friction material evaluation, but to be accurate these tests must be carefully designed to eliminate variations caused by changing conditions. ControUed-temperature tests and parallel-test controlled vehicles normally perform the function satisfactorily but at increased cost. [Pg.275]

A semi-batch reactor has the same disadvantages as the batch reactor. However, it has the advantages of good temperature control and the capability of minimizing unwanted side reactions by maintaining a low concentration of one of the reactants. Semi-batch reactors are also of value when parallel reactions of different orders occur, where it may be more profitable to use semi-batch rather than batch operations. In many applications semi-batch reactors involve a substantial increase in the volume of reaction mixture during a processing cycle (i.e., emulsion polymerization). [Pg.226]

Figure 4-8 shows a continuous reactor used for bubbling gaseous reactants through a liquid catalyst. This reactor allows for close temperature control. The fixed-bed (packed-bed) reactor is a tubular reactor that is packed with solid catalyst particles. The catalyst of the reactor may be placed in one or more fixed beds (i.e., layers across the reactor) or may be distributed in a series of parallel long tubes. The latter type of fixed-bed reactor is widely used in industry (e.g., ammonia synthesis) and offers several advantages over other forms of fixed beds. [Pg.230]

The sulfoxidation of normal Cl4-CI7 paraffins with sulfur dioxide, oxygen, and water is performed under UV radiation in parallel reactors (1 in Fig. 3). The reaction enthalpy is dissipated by cooling of the paraffin in heat exchangers. The 30- to 60-kW UV lamps are cooled by a temperature-controlled water cycle. The reaction mixture leaving the reactors separates spontaneously into two phases in 2. The lighter paraffin phase is recirculated to the reactors. The composition of the heavy raw acid phase is shown in Table 5. [Pg.150]

The temperature difference between inlet and outlet temperature at the coil(s) of the refrigerant should be smaller than 1 °C (AT < 1 °C), to ensure a uniform condensation on the total coil. On warmer areas no ice will condense until the temperature at the ice surface has increased to the warmer temperature on the coil. For large surfaces it is necessary to use several coils or plates in parallel, each of which must be separately temperature controlled. If the condenser is operated in an overflow mode, the weight of the liquid column should not change the boiling temperature of the liquid at the bottom of the column measurably. [Pg.142]

In parallel with improvements in chemical sensor performance, analytical science has also seen tremendous advances in the development of compact, portable analytical instruments. For example, lab-on-a-chip (LOAC) devices enable complex bench processes (sampling, reagent addition, temperature control, analysis of reaction products) to be incorporated into a compact, device format that can provide reliable analytical information within a controlled internal environment. LOAC devices typically incorporate pumps, valves, micromachined flow manifolds, reagents, sampling system, electronics and data processing, and communications. Clearly, they are much more complex than the simple chemo-sensor described above. In fact, chemosensors can be incorporated into LOAC devices as a selective sensor, which enables the sensor to be contained within the protective internal environment. Figure 5... [Pg.127]

Runs of other sizes may be made in the same apparatus. With half the quantity of sodium specified, temperature control demands much more attention. With larger quantities, the nickel crucible is dispensed with, and the carefully cleaned pot used. The checkers used 260-270 g. of sodium and averaged a yield of 94 per cent the reaction time was increased by only one-half hour. By arranging two series of apparatus in parallel, but connected to the same cylinder of ammonia, one operator can prepare twice as much amide in almost the same time. [Pg.46]

Figure 11.3d shows a process where the manipulated variable affects the two controlled variables and in parallel. An important example is in distilla tion column control where reflux flow aSecte both distillate composition and a tray temperature. The process has a parallel structure and this leads to a parallel cascade control system. [Pg.382]

Oil processing is accomplished in four parallel trains of three stage separation to restove solution gas followed by an electrostatic coalescer for oil dehydration, and finally, oil cooling for stabiliza-tion and pipeline temperature control at 145°F (63°C). [Pg.56]

The instrument is composed of an interface to plug the disposable cartridge, a temperature controller, a multichannel pumping device and valves as well as a multiplexer electrochemical detector for sequential or parallel detection of the amperometric events occurring in each of the eight channels for some protocols, it can also serve to deliver different reagents such as the secondary antibody or the substrate and thus provide fully automatic assays. [Pg.891]
