Tetravalent metal phosphonates (MELS ) are layered compounds that can be considered organic/inorganic polymers. The organic functionality provided by the phosphonate largely determines the surface chemistry of these materials. Choosing phosphonates with an arylsulfonic acid function produces materials that are effective as acid catalysts. This paper describes synthetic procedures used to prepare arylsulfonic acid MELS and methods to increase and stabilize their surface area, porosity, and swelling properties. Acid catalysis by MELS is exemplified by the synthesis of methyl tertiary butyl ether. [Pg.247]

The last forty years have seen an extensive, world-wide investigation of the chemical properties of the synthetic element, plutonium. As a result, as much is known about the chemical properties of this element as is known about the chemical properties of most of the naturally occurring elements. The papers in this volume, presented at the Symposium on the Chemistry of Plutonium held during the Kansas City meeting of the American Chemical Society, in September, 1982, represent an up-dating of this large amount of information. [Pg.9]

This account of the beginnings and early days of the forty years of plutonium chemistry should serve as a background for the following papers which illuminate many of the accomplishments of the intervening years and emphasize the high level of the present status of information on the chemical properties of this remarkable synthetic element. [Pg.29]

Huffman in the X-ray Molecular Structure Center. From 1992 to 1994 he joined the research group of Professor John D. Corbett at Iowa State University where he pursued synthetic solid-state chemistry research exploring structure/property relationships. In 1994 he joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at North Carolina State University where he is a full professor of Inorganic Chemistry pursuing synthetic, structural and mechanistic investigations in inorganic condensed matter. He has published more than 70 research papers and has several patented discoveries. He received an NSF CAREER award in 1995, was named a Cottrell Scholar of the Research Corporation in 1997, and received a Sigma Xi Research Award in 1999. [Pg.371]

Following the adoption of azolides as valuable and versatile reagents in synthetic organic chemistry,[1] and also in the context of their potential role in biochemistry, a great many kinetic, mechanistic, and theoretical papers appeared concerning this group of compounds and their properties. Some of these papers[18],[20] are very useful for a better understanding of the reactivity of azolides. [Pg.20]

Structural aspects were discussed, but not heavily, in the first edition. The complexity of new compounds (and macromolecules) now being investigated has driven many of the technological advances in X-ray crystallographic data collection and structure solution over the last two decades. Small-molecule (m.w. < 1,000 g mol-1) structure determinations are now routinely carried out, and Co complexes constitute a significant proportion of these. Indeed, the incorporation of crystal structures in most papers reporting new synthetic coordination chemistry is now a standard feature much more so than at the time of CCC(1987) (Figure 1). Inevitably, most of the new compounds described herein have been the subject of crystal structure determinations, rather... [Pg.3]

In this paper we have tried to present a brief overview of state-of-the-art of the synthetic chemistry of oxide materials based on polybasic carboxylic hydroxy (amino) acid routes. It has been shown that, in spite of enormous number of papers on the subject (we have mentioned just a few latest references, significant efforts should be undertaken in order to... [Pg.506]

John Sheehan s major research achievements are described in some 150 synthetic papers which cover not only penicillin, but peptides, antibiotics, alkaloids and steroids. For these scientific contributions John received several high honors including the American Chemical Society award in Pure Chemistry (1951), the American Chemical Society award for Creative Work in Synthetic Organic Chemistry... [Pg.270]

Photocycloaddition reactions occupy an important position in organic chemistry as a synthetic tool. Many different types of photocycloadditions have been discovered, and several hundreds of examples have been listed. 1-3) An estimate of the large size of the field can be obtained from the review articles and books, numbering over thirty, published in the decade 1960—1970. 4> Since, from the very beginning, organic photochemists have speculated about the mechanisms of their reactions, papers that describe experiments designed to test mechanistic schemes and theoretical results are also very numerous. [Pg.144]

The selective C-H functionalization of alkanes has been a long-standing goal of the organometallic community. The intermolecular C-H insertion chemistry has arguably become, over the last decade, one of the most efficient processes for such a functionalization. Although there are several early papers on the C-H functionalization of alkanes by ethyl diazoacetate,7 -74 the reaction was not considered initially to be of broad synthetic utility.46 An illustrative example from the early literature is the reaction of ethyl diazoacetate with 2-methylbutane, catalyzed by rhodium trifluoroacetate, in which all four possible products were formed (Equation (3)).72,73 The product ratio could be influenced by the nature of the catalyst but the formation of mixtures could not be effectively controlled. [Pg.168]

The early, independent work of Starks, Markosa and Brandstrom from ca. 1965-1969, brought into focus with Starks classical paper in 1971, showed PTC to be potent and versatile synthetic tool.[1-4] Since that time, the well-documented investigations of PTC have been massive and vigorous.[5-7] In polymer chemistry PTC was effectively exploited first in anionic addition polymerization and more recently has been extended to condensation polymerization.[5,8-9] However, until a very few years ago, the use of solid-liquid PTC systems in polycondensation has for the most part escaped this intensive scrutiny. Consequently, some time ago we began a rather broad study into the use of solid-liquid PTC to effect polycondensations.[10]... [Pg.128]

The importance of carbon-centred radical cyclizations in organic chemistry has been documented in the large number of papers published each year and numerous reviews and books dealing with this subject. In Chapter 7 the reader can find a collection of such processes mediated by organosilanes. The silicon-centred radical cyclizations have instead received very little attention, although there has been a growing interest in silicon-containing compounds from a synthetic point of view, due to their versatility and applicability to material science. As we shall see, this area of research is very active and some recent examples show the potentiality of silyl radical cyclization in the construction of complex molecules. [Pg.119]
