PAINT TAILINGS

Model experiments on the mixture (simulating paint tailings) exposed to air showed that storage at low temperature (7°C) led to a larger build-up of peroxide than occurred at 35°C. This would account for spontaneous ignition of paint tailings (residues) stored at low temperature and subsequently heated to 60°C.

The remaining tailings left over from the clay fractionation step is either flocculated with alum, high molecular weight polymers, or a weak (pH 3.0) solution of sulfuric acid, and stored in settling ponds as waste, or may be filtered and sold to the brick industry as a coating material. It also may be dried and sold as a filler in plastics and textured paint (qv). 

Flash Rusting (Bulk Paint and "Wet" Film Studies). The moderate conductivity (50-100 ohm-cm) of the water borne paint formulations allowed both dc potentiodynamic and ac impedance studies of mild steel in the bulk paints to be measured. (Table I). AC impedance measurements at the potentiostatically controlled corrosion potentials indicated depressed semi-circles with a Warburg diffusion low frequency tail in the Nyquist plots (Figure 2). These measurements at 10, 30 and 60 minute exposure times, showed the presence of a reaction involving both charge transfer and mass transfer controlling processes. The charge transfer impedance 0 was readily obtained from extrapolation of the semi-circle to the real axis at low frequencies. The transfer impedance increased with exposure time in all cases. 

A bomb primer-detonator is an interchangeable unit (composed of a primer delay element and a detonator) which is designed to provide delay in the action of older models of tail fuzes. Primer-detonators of various time delays are available, with the exact delay time of each painted on the detonator head (Ref 51 a,... 

Bimolecularly thick films formed at a pinhole (1 -2 mm) separating two aqueous solutions. The BLM is formed by painting the surfactant (or lipid), dissolved in a hydrocarbon solvent, across the pinhole and allowing it to thin to two layers of closely packed molecules which are apposed tail-to-tail.

A line is polar if its two directions can be distinguished and a plane is polar if its two surfaces are not equivalent. Substituted aromatic amines have been widely used in the chemical industry as intermediates in the production of dyes, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, paints, etc. They may be released into the environment directly as a result of industrial discharge form factories or indirectly as a result of degradation of phenylcarbamates, phenylurea and anilide herbicides, and azodyes. Chromatographic separation and quantification of primary amines is hampered by their polarity that can cause tailing and irreversible adsorption.
