PAINT TAILINGS

Model experiments on the mixture (simulating paint tailings) exposed to air showed that storage at low temperature (7°C) led to a larger build-up of peroxide than occurred at 35°C. This would account for spontaneous ignition of paint tailings (residues) stored at low temperature and subsequently heated to 60°C. [Pg.1254]

The remaining tailings left over from the clay fractionation step is either flocculated with alum, high molecular weight polymers, or a weak (pH 3.0) solution of sulfuric acid, and stored in settling ponds as waste, or may be filtered and sold to the brick industry as a coating material. It also may be dried and sold as a filler in plastics and textured paint (qv). [Pg.288]

Flash Rusting (Bulk Paint and "Wet" Film Studies). The moderate conductivity (50-100 ohm-cm) of the water borne paint formulations allowed both dc potentiodynamic and ac impedance studies of mild steel in the bulk paints to be measured. (Table I). AC impedance measurements at the potentiostatically controlled corrosion potentials indicated depressed semi-circles with a Warburg diffusion low frequency tail in the Nyquist plots (Figure 2). These measurements at 10, 30 and 60 minute exposure times, showed the presence of a reaction involving both charge transfer and mass transfer controlling processes. The charge transfer impedance 0 was readily obtained from extrapolation of the semi-circle to the real axis at low frequencies. The transfer impedance increased with exposure time in all cases. [Pg.21]

A bomb primer-detonator is an interchangeable unit (composed of a primer delay element and a detonator) which is designed to provide delay in the action of older models of tail fuzes. Primer-detonators of various time delays are available, with the exact delay time of each painted on the detonator head (Ref 51 a,... [Pg.1013]

Bimolecularly thick films formed at a pinhole (1 -2 mm) separating two aqueous solutions. The BLM is formed by painting the surfactant (or lipid), dissolved in a hydrocarbon solvent, across the pinhole and allowing it to thin to two layers of closely packed molecules which are apposed tail-to-tail. [Pg.204]

As a precursor to this discussion, the definition of certain terms used becomes obligatory Ballistic Shape. For small arms ammo, three general bullet shapes apply. Bullets with round noses (which, except for pistol or sub-machine gun ammo, are virtually obsolete), bullets with pointed noses and flat bases, and bullets with painted noses and streamlined or boat-tailed... [Pg.385]

A shelf or tail suspension apparatus to suspend mice. The apparatuses may be wooden or plastic boxes (e.g., 680 X 365 x 280 mm), painted to contrast with mice. The design of the TST apparatus is usually negotiable, given that the animal is securely attached to a solid suspension apparatus and that this apparatus is at least 35 cm above the nearest surface (18, 19). Several companies provide behavioral tracking software that is flexible with the variations in experimental design and would yield reliable data that would translate between designs (Table 16.1). Additionally, there are also prefabricated apparatuses that can be purchased (see Table 16.2 for details). [Pg.270]

Bob and his friends walk to a painting of the Earth with an Orthetrum cancellatum hovering beside it. A black tail protrudes from the alien s abdomen and appears to be inserted into Antarctica. A grin is on the creature s face. At least Bob thinks it s a grin. [Pg.49]

A line is polar if its two directions can be distinguished and a plane is polar if its two surfaces are not equivalent. This definition of polarity has, of course, nothing to do with charge separation. A polar line has a head and a tail and a polar plane has a front and a back. A vertical line on the surface of the Earth is polar with respect to gravity and a sheet of paper with one of its sides painted is polar with respect to its color. [Pg.57]

Photodecomposition of azo compounds can be brought about by single electron transfer. Thus sensitization of (14) (Scheme 6) by 9,10-dicyanoanthra-cene (DCA) results in the formation of the trityl cation and a phenyl radical. Photocleavable surfactants have several potential applications, e.g. in water-based paints and coatings and in advanced drug-delivery systems. The azo group can be used to provide a photocleavable link between the tail and headgroup of a surfactant molecule, and a number of such surfactants, based on the azosulfonate functionality, have been synthesized (15, R = hexyl, octyl, decyl and dodecyl). When aqueous solutions of these surfactants are photolysed, N2 and the sulfite... [Pg.319]

Meanwhile, her fleetmate Columbus was making her ill-fated bid to make it home from Vera Cruz, Mexico, where she had sought sanctuary after her Caribbean pleasure cruise was interrupted by the outbreak of hostilities. Prior to sailing for home, the Columbus master had his slii] darkened in like fashion to the Bremen but, in addition, the tops of her funnels were painted black. In the event none of this particularly aided the ship. On her voyage north she hugged the American coast for as long as she could, tailed by a succession of American warships, but, on 19 December, immediately upon leaving the safety of neutral American waters, she was intercepted by the destroyer HMS Hyperion and was scuttled by her crew. [Pg.123]

Substituted aromatic amines have been widely used in the chemical industry as intermediates in the production of dyes, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, paints, etc. They may be released into the environment directly as a result of industrial discharge form factories or indirectly as a result of degradation of phenylcarbamates, phenylurea and anilide herbicides, and azodyes. Chromatographic separation and quantification of primary amines is hampered by their polarity that can cause tailing and irreversible adsorption. Aromatic primary amines were derivatized to 7/-allyl-7/ -arylthioureaby... [Pg.318]
