Cost of the packing and its effect on the system costs must be considered, as some packings are much more expensive than others, yet produce very little improved performance. In 1978, Bryan [11] reported on crystal structure precursors of liquid crystalline phases and their implications for the molecular arrangement in the mesophase. In this work he presented classical nematogenic precursors, where the molecules in the crystalline state form imbricated packing, and non-classical ones with cross-sheet structures. The crystalline-nematic phase transition was called displacive. The displacive type of transition involves comparatively limited displacements of the molecules from the positions which they occupy with respect to their nearest neighbours in the crystal. In most cases, smectic precursors form layered structures. The crystalline-smectic phase transition was called reconstitutive because the molecular arrangement in the crystalline state must alter in a more pronounced fashion in order to achieve the mesophase arrangement [12]. [Pg.141]

However, a sample taken in the doctor s office can be properly packed and shipped to a special laboratory, if necessary. Because endosulfan leaves the body fairly quickly, these methods are useful only for finding exposures that have occurred within the last few days. At this time, these methods can only be used to prove that a person has been exposed to endosulfan. The test results cannot be used to predict if you wiU have any adverse health effects. Exposure to other chemicals at the same time at hazardous waste sites could cause some confusion in understanding these results. Cleanup of sample extract. Pipet 2.5 mL of the solution derived from Module GPC into a long-necked round-bottom flask or a pear-shaped flask and add 10 mL of isooctane. By rotating the flask slowly, carefully evaporate the solution to ca 1 mL in a rotary evaporator (water-bath temperature set at 30 0 °C). If an odor of ethyl acetate is still present, add isooctane again and repeat the evaporation. Repeat, if necessary, until no odor of ethyl acetate is present the ethyl acetate must be completely removed. Our most recent work with B megapotamica has been with the isolation of large quantities of baccharinoids from a 1800 Kg collection. The workup of the crude extract (ca. 30 Kg of black tarry material) of this plant material was conducted by Dr. Fred Boettner of Polyscience, Inc. This near Herculean task required tremendous quantities of solvents, column packings and time to complete. An outline of the fractionation scheme is presented in Figure 2.
