Removal of Refractory Organics. Ozone reacts slowly or insignificantly with certain micropoUutants in some source waters such as carbon tetrachloride, trichlorethylene (TCE), and perchlorethylene (PCE), as well as in chlorinated waters, ie, ttihalomethanes, THMs (eg, chloroform and bromoform), and haloacetic acids (HAAs) (eg, trichloroacetic acid). Some removal of these compounds occurs in the ozone contactor as a result of volatilization (115). Air-stripping in a packed column is effective for removing some THMs, but not CHBr. THMs can be adsorbed on granular activated carbon (GAG) but the adsorption efficiency is low. [Pg.502]

Extensive work has been done on corrosion inhibitors (140), activated carbon use (141—144), multiple absorption zones and packed columns (145,146), and selective absorption and desorption of gas components (147,148). All packing materials produced at PSS are tested for all relevant properties. Catechin-immobilizing polymer particles were prepared by laccase-catalyzed oxidation of catechin in the presence of amine-containing porous polymer particles. The resulting particles showed good scavenging activity toward stable free l,l-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl radical and 2,2 -azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) radical cation. Implementation of SFC has initially been hampered by instrumental problems, such as back-pressure regulation, need for syringe pumps, consistent flow-rates, pressure and density gradient control, modifier gradient elution, small volume injection (nL), poor reproducibility of injection, and miniaturised detection. These difficulties, which limited sensitivity, precision or reproducibility in industrial applications, were eventually overcome. Because instrumentation for SFC is quite complex and expensive, the technique is still not widely accepted. At the present time few SFC instrument manufacturers are active. Berger and Wilson [239] have described packed SFC instrumentation equipped with FID, UV/VIS and NPD, which can also be employed for open-tubular SFC in a pressure-control mode. Column technology has been largely borrowed from GC (for the open-tubular format) or from HPLC (for the packed format). Open-tubular coated capillaries (50-100 irn i.d.), packed capillaries (100-500 p,m i.d.), and packed columns (1 -4.6 mm i.d.) have been used for SFC (Table 4.27). [Pg.206]

It is difficult to keep an electrolyte solution completely free from water, even when the experiment is carried out in a glove box or with a vacuum line. In such cases, procedures such as adding powdered active alumina directly into the electrolyte solution or passing the electrolyte solution through a column packed with active alumina can be used to remove residual water [16]. These procedures are also effective in removing various impurities, which are either acidic, basic, nucleophilic or electrophilic. However, it should be noted that some of the electroactive species may also be adsorbed onto the powder. [Pg.227]
