In order to calculate the wetting of the granules or pellets with injected fiq-uid, the mesoscale model of the nozzle zone has been used. The implemented model is based on the DEM coupled with CFD calculations and allows the approximation of the overspray part of the suspension (see Fig. 3). 

In the submodel on the mesoscale simulation, the overspray part of suspension and its influence on the coating layer growth dynamics have been investigated. The droplets have been considered as discrete elements and the Newton—Euler equations of motions have been solved for all droplets. The dynamics of soHd pellets and fluid profile were taken from the previously obtained DPM results. To describe the particle growth the one-dimensional PBM has been used. Air spraying is the most widely used method for enamel application. In this process, the enamel is atomized and propelled by air onto the base metal to form an enamel coating. The wastes generated during paint application are primarily due to 1) paint overspray, and 2) the failure of the application which requires the stripping, cleaning, and repainting of the item. Source reduction can be achieved by use of low overspray application equipment, proper operator training, preventive maintenance, and parts inspection.

The second part of these studies is concerned with the experimental feasibility of a desired high conversion with simultaneous granulation of the reaction product and non-converted raw material due to drying of the suspension and accumulation on these particles in both batch and continuous modes of operation. The dust from attrition and overspray can either be deposited onto the particles or used as internal seeds, while the granulated products are free of dust and easily dosable. The final part of the picture concerns recyclability of coating materials. Improvements in transfer efficiency to substrate and recycle and reuse of overspray are becoming of increasing importance. The use of super critical CO2 processing and application is being commercialised and is seen to offer potential benefits over conventional solventborne technologies. 

The second field test assessed PCO to treat paint solvent vapors. Painting operations for military and civilian vehicles are conducted in ventilated enclosures called paint booths. Filters in the exhaust ducts trap paint droplets from the paint overspray while the VOC-laden air is typically exhausted through roof vents. The vent emissions can contain several hundred parts per million (ppm) of the paint solvents, which continue to evaporate from the vehicle after painting is complete. Most types of paint generally contain significant amounts of VOCs such as toluene, a suspected carcinogen, as well as other hazardous solvents such as methyl efliyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, hexanes, xylenes, n-butyl acetate, and other components in lesser amounts.
