Anhydrous magnesium nitrate [10377-60-3] Mg(N02)2, is very difficult to isolate. The commercial product is the deUquescent hexahydrate [13446-18-9] Mg(N02)2 6H20. As illustrated in the solubiUty curve in Figure 7, the hexahydrate is the stable soHd phase between —18 and 55—56°C. Properties are given in Table 17 (1 4). The unit ceU contains two formula units and the calculated density is 1.643 g/cm. ... [Pg.352]

Magnesium nitrate is prepared by dissolving magnesium oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate in nitric acid, followed by evaporation and crystallization at room temperature. Impurities such as calcium, iron, and aluminum are precipitated by pretreatment of the solution with slight excess of magnesium oxide, followed by filtration. Most magnesium nitrate is manufactured and used on site in other processes. [Pg.352]

Uses. A soluble form of magnesium nitrate is used as a fertilizer ia states such as Florida where drainage through the porous, sandy soil depletes the magnesium (see Fertilizers). Magnesium nitrate is also used as a prilling aid in the manufacture of ammonium nitrate. A 0.25—0.50% addition of magnesium nitrate to the process improves the stabHity of the prills and also improves durabHity and abrasion resistance. [Pg.352]

Thermo dynamic data for nitric acid are given ia Table 2. Properties for the ternary systems sulfuric acid—nitric acid—water (5,14) and magnesium nitrate—nitric acid—water (11,15—17) used ia processes for concentrating nitric acid are available. [Pg.39]

Because of restrictions in equipment si2e, magnesium nitrate processes were initially limited to small plants. Improvements in the materials of constmction have led to increased capacities and a lower capital cost. Sulfuric acid processes are usually preferred when reconcentration of the sulfuric acid is not requited, ie, when the dilute sulfuric can be used to make another product. [Pg.44]
