A frequently observed response of plant cells exposed to saline stress is the accumulation of proline. Two cell lines of tobacco, one resistant and the other sensitive to growth inhibition by NaCl, accumulated proline when exposed to 1.5% w/v NaCl in the growth media (Dix Pearce, 1981). The NaCl sensitive line accumulated proline more rapidly than did the resistant line, though the levels accumulated were not adequate to provide osmotic protection against salt stress. The authors suggested that proline accumulation may have a protective role other than osmoregulation and may be symptomatic of stress injury, the nature of which was not discussed.

Surprisingly, very little physiological work has been done to understand the nature and processes of plant recovery from extreme drought stress, especially in relation to plant production (Chapter 7). In order for the plant to recover properly from severe water stress, its various meristems must survive. The association between severe plant stress and the factors that affect meristem survival and function upon rehydration are unclear though osmoregulation may have a possible protective role and as a potential source of carbon for recovery. Active plant apices generally excel in osmoregulation and do not lose much water upon plant dehydration (Barlow, Munns Brady, 1980). 

Ability of tissues to increase their solute concentration (osmoregulate), conferring a temporary advantage by enabling the tissues to maintain turgor at low water potentials by decreasing their osmotic potentials. 

Apart from the action upon Na+ channels, p,p -DDT and its metabolites can have certain other toxic effects. It has been reported that p,p -DDT can inhibit certain ATPases (see EHC 83). In fish, the inhibition of ATPases can affect osmoregulation.
