One method for complying with OSHA mandates and one type of safety management system is to become an OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) member. This diagram summarizes the information as listed in Table 13.3 and help you to apply for and successful obtain VPP status.

This body of research, combined with studies of individual companies (see boxes, below, with Case Studies of Programs Implemented under OSHA s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) and Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP)) danonstrate clearly that injury and illness prevention programs are effective at the establishment level in dramatically reducing risk of workplace injury. This effect has also been detected in state-wide comparisons. 

Audit scores continued to climb, reflecting continued improvement in safety management. Results became so good that it was decided to have some locations quality for OSHA s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). For that program, superior results must be demonstrated and the location must meet the requirements of a thorough safety management audit. 

OSHA is known for establishing prescriptive regulations for worker health and safety, but the agency has pursued more goal-based practices, including process safety management (PSM) and a voluntary protection program (VPP), both of which are explained below.

If an organization s occupational health and safety management system meets the requirements of ZIO, its system will surpass the provisions in the standards and guidelines reviewed and, in particular, exceed the certification requirements for 18001 and for OSHA s Voluntary Protection Program.
