ASTM (formerly American Society for Testing and Materials) International is a global fomm for the development of consensus standards organized in 1898, ASTM International is one of the largest voluntary standards developing organizations in the world. More than 12,000 ASTM standards can be found in the 80+-volume Annual Book of ASTM Standards. 

The pharmaceutical community was asked take on the responsibility for developing standards to support the introduction of innovative tools and technologies under the PAT framework. The ASTM International provided the process to develop these standards using technical expertise in all relevant disciplines from the pharmaceutical community and other industrial sectors. A significant support infrastructure for the desired state is emerging in several academic and scientific organizations and associations. 

ASTM International, originally known as the American Society for Testing and Materials ANSI, the American National Standards Institute and ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, are organizations that set standards in a variety of areas.

ASTM American Society for Testing and Materials is a nonprofit organization with the purpose of developing standards on characteristics and performance of materials, products, systems, and services and promoting the related knowledge. Now ASTM International. 

Commercial trade in chemical celluloses is assisted by the definition of standard methods of analysis. Extensive collections of quality-defining protocols have been assembled by ISO, the International Standards Organization ASTM, the American Society for Testing Materials TAPPI, the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (of USA) DIN (German Industrial Norms) and many others.

Because some mechanical properties depend on how the material was tested, it is important and necessary to establish specified test methods. Standard test methods have been adopted for ceramics. In the United States ASTM International (originally the American Society for Testing and Materials, ASTM) is the primary organization developing standards for materials testing. ASTM Committee C-28 on Advanced Ceramics has completed several standards and ones related to mechanical properties and testing are listed in Table 16.1. Specialized subcommittees work on specific areas within the field of advanced ceramics. Coimnittee C28.01 is involved with standards related to mechanical properties and performance of monolithic ceramics. Committee C28.02 deals with reliability issues. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has established several free databases that list mechanical properties of ceramics. 

Many methods of plasticizer testing are included in national and international standards. In the present move towards unification of methods of testing, the main analytical procedures can be found in documents currently in domains of the International Standard Organization and the ASTM International. Some unique methods can also be found in documents of other standardization organizations such as Australian, British, Danish, Finish, French, German, Irish, Italian, Luxembourg, and Polish, which are included in the references. Standard methods are listed in references in alphabetical order. Methods of analysis pertinent to application of plasticizers are summarized in separate sections below and these summaries are also organized in an alphabetical order. 

Two of the largest voluntary standards organizations are the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and ASTM International. 

ASTM International This standards organization formerly was called the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). It operates much like ANSI, using volunteer committees from among interested companies, associations, and others. ASTM International publishes more than 12,000 standards. Some involve safety and health matters. 

Many professional societies have developed standards on matters related to their fields. Some organizations sponsor ANSI and ASTM International standards. Others professional societies maintain and publish their own standards. For example, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has published its boiler and pressure vessel code since 1914, along with other standards. Also, SAE International, formerly the Society of Automotive Engineers, publishes many standards related to automobiles, trucks, and other vehicles. Table 5-2 is an incomplete list of professional societies and organizations that produce standards related to safety and health. 

Methods for the determination of protective clothing have been standardized for both protective function and clothing comfort for different types of protective clothing by various international, national and industrial organizations including International Standard Organisation (ISO), European Standardisation Organisations (CEN), British Standard (BS) and ASTM/AATCC.
