Active immunization, vaccination, involves administration of an antigen as a whole, killed organism, attenuated (live) organism, or a specific protein or peptide constituent of an organism. Booster doses often are required, especially when killed (inactivated) organisms are used as the immunogen. hi the United States, vaccination has sharply curtailed or practically eliminated a variety of major infections, including diphtheria, measles, mumps, pertussis, rubella, tetanus, Haemophilus influenzae type b, and pneumococcus. [Pg.680]

Addition of sodium dithionite to formaldehyde yields the sodium salt of hydroxymethanesulfinic acid [79-25-4] H0CH2S02Na, which retains the useful reducing character of the sodium dithionite although somewhat attenuated in reactivity. The most important organic chemistry of sodium dithionite involves its use in reducing dyes, eg, anthraquinone vat dyes, sulfur dyes, and indigo, to their soluble leuco forms (see Dyes, anthraquinone). Dithionite can reduce various chromophores that are not reduced by sulfite. Dithionite can be used for the reduction of aldehydes and ketones to alcohols (348). Quantitative studies have been made of the reduction potential of dithionite as a function of pH and the concentration of other salts (349,350). [Pg.150]

Studies on S-layers present on the cell envelopes of a great variety of pathogenic organisms [100] revealed that these crystalhne arrays can represent important virulence factors. Most detailed studies have been performed on the fish pathogenic bacteria Aeromonas salmonicida and Aeromonas hydrophila [102] and the human pathogen Campylobacter fetus uh p. fetus [103] and Bacillus anthracis [104]. The ideal of any vaccine is to provide life-long protection to the individual against disease. Immunological memory (Chapter 14) depends upon the survival of cloned populations of small B and T lymphocytes (memory cells). These small lymphocytes have a lifespan in the body of ca. 15-20 years. Thus, if the immune system is not boosted, either by natural exposure to the organism or by re-immunization, then immunity gained in childhood will be attenuated or lost completely by the age of 30. Those vaccines which provide only poor protection against disease have proportionately reduced time-spans of effectiveness. Yellow fever vaccination, which is highly effective, must therefore be repeated at 10-year intervals, whilst typhoid vaccines are only effective for 1-3 years. Whether or not immunization in childhood is boosted at adolescence or in adult life depends on the relative risks associated with the infection as a function of age. [Pg.327]

Regulation of transmitter release does not rest solely on the frequency at which nerve impulses reach the terminals. Early experiments using stimulated sympathetic nerve/end-organ preparations in situ, or synaptosomes, indicated that release of [ HJnoradrenaline was attenuated by exposure to unlabelled, exogenous transmitter. This action was attributed to presynaptic adrenoceptors, designated a2-adrenoceptors, which were functionally distinct from either aj- or )S-adrenoceptors. Later experiments have confirmed that ai-adrenoceptors comprise a family of pharmacologically and structurally distinct adrenoceptor subtypes. [Pg.98]

In general it is unnecessary to spend much time adjusting the power level. The general rule is to adjust the power to about 10 db attenuation for organic radicals and to use full power for transition metal complexes and those organometallics where the unpaired electron is primarily located on the metal. [Pg.13]
