Former positions include Research Director, Malti-Chem Research Centre, Nandesari, Vadodara (1974-1988). Lecturer, Indian Institute of Science (1953). Head, Division of Organic Chemistry (Natural Products), National Chemical Laboratory, Pune (1960). Visiting Professor, Stevens Institute of Technology (1968) University of Georgia (1969) University of Oklahoma (1970-1971). Author of 280 publications, several books, and 50 patents. [Pg.1290]

Heterocyclic compounds occupy a unique place in the realm of organic and medicinal chemistry. A good number of human and veterinary medicines, agrochemicals, insecticides and pesticides, dyes and paints, and so on bear heterocyclic moiety in their molecules. A huge number of natural products having one or more heterocyclic rings are well known to serve the mankind in different ways. The research on synthesis and chemistry of heterocyclic compounds, therefore, has always been on the forefront of organic chemistry, natural product chemistry, and medicinal chemistry. [Pg.163]

Hydrocarbons are divided into two mam classes aliphatic and aromatic This classifi cation dates from the nineteenth century when organic chemistry was devoted almost entirely to the study of materials from natural sources and terms were coined that reflected a substance s origin Two sources were fats and oils and the word aliphatic was derived from the Greek word aleiphar meaning ( fat ) Aromatic hydrocarbons irre spective of their own odor were typically obtained by chemical treatment of pleasant smelling plant extracts... [Pg.57]

Alkenes are hydrocarbons that contain a carbon-carbon double bond A carbon-carbon double bond is both an important structural unit and an important func tional group m organic chemistry The shape of an organic molecule is influenced by the presence of this bond and the double bond is the site of most of the chemical reactions that alkenes undergo Some representative alkenes include isobutylene (an industrial chemical) a pmene (a fragrant liquid obtained from pine trees) md fame sene (a naturally occurring alkene with three double bonds)... [Pg.187]

Functional group transformations of epoxides rank among the fundamental reactions of organic chemistry and epoxides are commonplace natural products The female gypsy moth for example attracts the male by emittmg an epoxide known as disparlure On detechng the presence of this pheromone the male follows the scent to its ongm and mates with the female... [Pg.261]

Some esters of inorganic acids such as dimethyl sulfate are used as reagents m syn thetic organic chemistry Certain naturally occurring alkyl phosphates play an important role m biological processes... [Pg.641]

We 11 see numerous examples of both reaction types m the following sections Keep m mind that m vivo reactions (reactions m living systems) are enzyme catalyzed and occur at far greater rates than those for the same transformations carried out m vitro ( m glass ) m the absence of enzymes In spite of the rapidity with which enzyme catalyzed reactions take place the nature of these transformations is essentially the same as the fundamental processes of organic chemistry described throughout this text... [Pg.1071]

Synthetic adhesives have resulted from developments in the field of organic chemistry. Virtually all are obtained from petroleum, natural gas, or coal by-products. [Pg.378]

Synthetics. The lack of spice products to satisfy demand and the wide variation in price and availabihty have caused the manufacture of selected synthetics, chemically identical to the component in the natural spice, to replace the vital components of some spices. However, synthetic organic chemistry is not yet able to manufacture economically the many homologous piperine [94-62-2] components in black pepper or those capsaicin [404-86-4] amides in... [Pg.26]

In addition, vanillin was among the three or four aroma chemicals that helped perfumers of the past to imagine a new generation of fragrance combinations. The work done in organic chemistry by chemical companies has helped perfumers who had been restrained in their creation by the avadabihty of raw materials, which include natural oils and extracts made by the enfleurage process, ie, the property of perfumes to stick on fat and greases. Those extracts were weak, flat, and unpleasant. [Pg.400]

At one time it was felt that it would be possible to produce silicon analogues of the multiplicity of carbon compounds which form the basis of organic chemistry. Because of the valency difference and the electropositive nature of the element this has long been known not to be the case. It is not even possible to prepare silanes higher than hexasilane because of the inherent instability of the silicon-silicon bond in the higher silanes. [Pg.816]
