Organic acids, production capacities

Acetic anhydtide [108-24-7] (CH2C0)20, is a mobile, colorless liquid that has an acrid odor and is a more pierciag lacrimator than acetic acid [64-19-7]. It is the largest commercially produced carboxyUc acid anhydride U.S. production capacity is over 900,000 t yearly. Its chief iadustrial appHcation is for acetylation reactions it is also used ia many other appHcations ia organic synthesis, and it has some utility as a solvent ia chemical analysis. [Pg.75]

Adipic acid is a very large volume organic chemical. Worldwide production in 1986 reached 1.6 x 10 t (3.5 x 10 lb) (158) and in 1989 was estimated at more than 1.9 x 10 t (Table 7). It is one of the top fifty (159) chemicals produced in the United States in terms of volume, with 1989 production estimated at 745,000 t (160). Growth rate in demand in the United States for the period 1988—1993 is estimated at 2.5% per year based on 1987—1989 (160). Table 7 provides individual capacities for U.S. manufacturers. Western European capacity is essentially equivalent to that in the United States at 800,000 t/yr. Demand is highly cycHc (161), reflecting the automotive and housing markets especially. Prices usually foUow the variabiUty in cmde oil prices. Adipic acid for nylon takes about 60% of U.S. cyclohexane production the remainder goes to caprolactam for nylon-6, export, and miscellaneous uses (162). In 1989 about 88% of U.S. adipic acid production was used in nylon-6,6 (77% fiber and 11% resin), 3% in polyurethanes, 2.5% in plasticizers, 2.7% miscellaneous, and 4.5% exported (160). [Pg.245]

Although a tremendous number of fermentation processes have been researched and developed to various extents, only a couple of hundred ate used commercially. Fermentation industries have continued to expand in terms of the number of new products on the market, the total volume (capacity), and the total sales value of the products. The early 1990s U.S. market for fermentation products was estimated to be in the 9-10 x 10 range. The total world market is probably three times that figure, and antibiotics continue to comprise a primary share of the industry. Other principal product categories are enzymes, several organic acids, baker s yeast, ethanol (qv), vitamins (qv), and steroid hormones (qv). [Pg.177]

Fruit and vegetable juices packed with 21-26 in. of vacuum and stored in uncoated aluminum cans caused severe corrosion as shown in Table III. The corrosion rate brought about by the juices depends more on the nature of the organic acid present and the buffering capacity of the juice than on the total titratable acidity (11). The use of coated aluminum containers considerably minimized corrosion problems. Product control under extended storage conditions may be achieved by using specific chemical additives. MnP is the most commonly widespread of the class II peroxidases [72, 73], It catalyzes a PLC -dependent oxidation of Mn2+ to Mn3+. The catalytic cycle is initiated by binding of H2O2 or an organic peroxide to the native ferric enzyme and formation of an iron-peroxide complex the Mn3+ ions finally produced after subsequent electron transfers are stabilized via chelation with organic acids like oxalate, malonate, malate, tartrate or lactate [74], The chelates of Mn3+ with carboxylic acids cause one-electron oxidation of various substrates thus, chelates and carboxylic acids can react with each other to form alkyl radicals, which after several reactions result in the production of other radicals. These final radicals are the source of autocataly tic ally produced peroxides and are used by MnP in the absence of H2O2. The versatile oxidative capacity of MnP is apparently due to the chelated Mn3+ ions, which act as diffusible redox-mediator and attacking, non-specifically, phenolic compounds such as biopolymers, milled wood, humic substances and several xenobiotics [72, 75, 76]. [Pg.143]

Deeper oxidation products like furan and, particularly, maleic acid anhydride, can be produced by catalysts that have a stronger oxidative power than the above type-(a) catalysts, but, at the same time, have retained the capacity to transfer oxygen selectively to the organic molecule (a capacity which is absent in the type-(b) catalysts). Besides, a more acidic character of the catalyst surface is probably required to produce an acidic product like maleic anhydride effectively. The most interesting catalysts of this group are V2Os-based catalysts and certain molybdates and Mo03-based catalysts. [Pg.180]

It has long been a mainstay of the organic chemicals industry, its manufacture increasing in sophistication and selectivity over the years.
