The study was designed to assess comprehensively the refinery s releases to all environmental media (i.e., air, water, land, etc.), and then develop and evaluate options for reducing these releases. 

Level of Protection 2 (LP-2)—High-Level Passive Protection. LP-2 provides protection by further limiting exposure to intentionally released threat agents, and it is similar to MilStd Class 1 collective protection (USACE, 1999). This level of protection involves options for reducing the vulnerability to threat agents that are not part of a standard building system. The emission of dibenzofurans and dioxins from industrial processes is a major environmental concern. One option to reduce emission levels is to vary the operation conditions in such way that dibenzofurans and dioxins are largely destroyed prior to their release into the environment. Focussing on dibenzofuran, the main objective of this work is to improve our understanding of the general oxidation chemistry and to provide a mechanism suitable for future modelling studies.
