Operative transport mode

As discussed in Sect. 2, there are three modes of transport diffusion, migration, and convection. We first rule out convection, not because it is unimportant, but because convective transport is the subject of Chap. 5. [Pg.100]

This leaves migration and diffusion. Rarely is it possible to solve transport problems exactly when two modes participate (some of the situations discussed in Sect. 4 provide exceptions). There is, therefore, a strong motivation to work under conditions in which either diffusion or migration can be eliminated. There is no way of obviating diffusion and, consequently, it is usual to remove migratory effects from a transport experiment. [Pg.100]

It may not be obvious exactly how the addition of excess supporting electrolyte effectively nullifies migration. This will be clearer after reading Sect. 4.6, in which the quantitative effect of additions of supporting electrolyte are assessed. [Pg.101]

Weber and Newman do the averaging by using a capillary framework. They assume that the two transport modes (diffusive for a vapor-equilibrated membrane and hydraulic for a liquid-equilibrated one) are assumed to occur in parallel and are switched between in a continuous fashion using the fraction of channels that are expanded by the liquid water. Their model is macroscopic but takes into account microscopic effects such as the channel-size distribution and the surface energy of the pores. Furthermore, they showed excellent agreement with experimental data from various sources and different operating conditions for values of the net water flux per proton flux through the membrane. [Pg.456]

All the various transport modes must conform to given codes and controls and also take into consideration the design limitations, mode of operation and possible hazard scenarios that might be encountered. Road, rail, marine, pipeline and air modes of transport are discussed in detail in the literature.10... [Pg.198]

When combining the membrane and the reactor into an integrated system, cost savings may be significant. This difference can be attributed to the convection and other transport modes in the separation steps by membranes in contrast to the traditional diffusion mode by other separation techniques. For example, the use of membrane reactors instead of the traditional reactors for bioengineered products can reduce the operating costs by as much as 25% [Chan and Brownstein, 1991]. [Pg.573]

In order to evaluate the steady-state water profile in the membrane of a PEFC under given operating conditions, the necessary membrane transport properties required thus include water uptake by the membrane as function of water activity and membrane pretreatment conditions, A(aw) (covered in Section 5.3.1) the diffusion coefficient of water in the membrane as a function of membrane water content, D ) the electroosmotic drag coefficient as a function of membrane water content, (A) and the membrane hydraulic permeability, A hy(i(A). Section 5.3.2 includes a discussion of water transport modes in ionomeric membranes. [Pg.250]

Scheduling activities related to oil product distribution have received a growing interest in the last years. Distribution and transfer operations of such products can be carried out by road, railroad, vessels, or pipelines. Pipelines are one of the most important transportation modes for oil products in Brazil. Some papers... [Pg.259]

Shippers of ORM-D materials would be required to comply with the regulations pertaining to such materials regardless of the transportation mode utilized. However, no carrier operating regulations apply, such as the carrying of shipping papers, unless the ORM-D materials are to be transported by aircraft. [Pg.356]

While the previous description represents a generic implementation, specific vehicle routing applications may have their own individual characteristics, requiring that transportation management and shipment planning software be customized to reflect the operating environment, customer needs, and the characteristics of the transportation mode (Hall and Partyka 1997). [Pg.2062]

Ship transportation is one of the most attractive transport modes for raw chemical procurement in chemical industry. Raw materials and basic chemicals are required constantly and in huge quantities to supply continuously operating chemical production plants. The ideal transport mode is the pipeline transport. However, pipehnes dedicated for basic and raw chemicals are seldom available due to large distances to bridge, high investment costs, and the inflexibility of sourcing. In most cases, raw and basic chemicals are transported by ships if a sea or river port is available. [Pg.108]

When the membrane is in contact with liquid water on one side and vapor on the other (i.e., it is neither fully liquid nor vapor equilibrated), as can often occur during fuel-cell operation, both the liquid- and vapor-equilibrated transport modes will occur. This results in a transition between modes that exists in the membrane. As discussed in the physical model, a continuous transition between the two transport modes is assumed. Thus, transport in the transition region is a superposition between the two transport modes they are treated as separate transport mechanisms occurring in parallel (i.e., the middle region in Figure 5.3). In this section, an approach to modeling the transition region is introduced followed by a discussion of its limitations, other approaches, and points to consider. [Pg.173]

Trucks are the most versatile of all transportation modes for coal hauling because they can operate over the widest areas where roads are available. [Pg.184]

Charge density effects are probably the easiest to investigate on amorphous OSC, enabling a generally better understanding of transport modes operating in different device types and comparing bulk and... [Pg.1339]

In the early 1990s, chemical companies recognized the need to take a fresh look at the safety, quality, and environmental aspects related to the provision of logistics services. Within the framework of the Responsible Care Programme, initiatives were started that have since evolved into a number of safety and quality assessment systems (SQAS), each related to a particular transport mode or logistics operation. [Pg.82]

Refer to type of 7 wastes in Sect. 2.1 and transportation modes selection principle in Sect. 2.2. In transportation section, they have delivery measurement that is delivery in-full on-time (DIFOT). The researcher had created the significance factors that link between 2 parts. It consists of (1) DC s location, (2) amount of couriers, (3) type of vehicle, (4) how to plan day-to-day operation, and (5) KPIs. Five factors are grouped with 7 wastes/mode selection and related to DIFO. Because of these factors should improve service level and make customer satisfy... [Pg.327]

A circulating fluidized bed (CFB) is operated in the transport mode, with solids carried over from the top of the riser separated and returned to the bottom of the riser via a standpipe and feeding or control device. The transition from low-velocity fluidization to transport operation occurs when significant solids entrainment commences with increasing superficial gas velocity. At least seven methods have been proposed (Bi et al., 2000) to quantify the transition. The criteria can be divided into two groups, one based on solids entrainment and the other on solids concentration profiles. [Pg.491]
