In primary recovery the natural energy comes mainly from gas and water in reservoir rocks. The gas may be dissolved in the oil or separated at the top of it in the form of a gas cap. Water, which is heavier than oil, collects below the petroleum. Depending on the source, the energy in the reservoir is called solution-gas drive, gas-cap drive, or water drive. In solution-gas drive, the gas expands and moves toward the opening, carrying some of the liquid with it. In gas-cap drive, gas is trapped in a cap above the oil as well as dissolved in it. As oil is produced from the reservoir, the gas cap expands and drives the oil toward the well. In water drive, water in a reservoir is held in place mainly by underground pressure. The reactor is a small steel bomb b (Fig. 356). The vertical part of the top opening carries a flat thread into which is screwed the steel head k. Most chemically reacting systems tliat we encounter are not tliennodynamically controlled since reactions are often carried out under non-equilibrium conditions where flows of matter or energy prevent tire system from relaxing to equilibrium. Almost all biochemical reactions in living systems are of tliis type as are industrial processes carried out in open chemical reactors. In addition, tire transient dynamics of closed systems may occur on long time scales and resemble tire sustained behaviour of systems in non-equilibrium conditions. A reacting system may behave in unusual ways tliere may be more tlian one stable steady state, tire system may oscillate, sometimes witli a complicated pattern of oscillations, or even show chaotic variations of chemical concentrations. [Pg.3054]

The equation does not take into account such pertubation factors as steric effects, solvent effects, and ion-pair formation. With samples that are difficult to dissolve, the first approach is usually to try digesting the sample with an acid or base. Table 7.2 lists the most commonly used acids and bases and summarizes their use. Digestion is commonly carried out in an open container, such as a beaker, using a hot plate as a source of heat. The chief advantage of this approach is its low cost as it requires no special equipment. Volatile reaction products, however, are lost, leading to a determinate error if analyte is included among the volatile substances. [Pg.200]

A second use of arrays arises in the detection of trace components of material introduced into a mass spectrometer. For such very small quantities, it may well be that, by the time a scan has been carried out by a mass spectrometer with a point ion collector, the tiny amount of substance may have disappeared before the scan has been completed. An array collector overcomes this problem. Often, the problem of detecting trace amounts of a substance using a point ion collector is overcome by measuring not the whole mass spectrum but only one characteristic m/z value (single ion monitoring or single ion detection). However, unlike array detection, this single-ion detection method does not provide the whole spectrum, and an identification based on only one m/z value may well be open to misinterpretation and error. [Pg.216]
