High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM) is the technique best suited for the structural characterization of nanometer-sized graphitic particles. In-situ processing of fullerene-related structures may be performed, and it has been shown that carbonaceous materials transform themselves into quasi-spherical onion-like graphitic particles under the effect of intense electron irradiation[l 1],... [Pg.163]

Schematic illustration of the growth process of a graphitic particle (a)-(d) polyhedral particle formed on the electric arc (d)-(h) transformation of a polyhedral particle into a quasi-spherical onion-like particle under the effect of high-energy electron irradiation in (f) the particle collapses and eliminates the inner empty space[25j. In both schemes, the formation of graphite layers begins at the surface and progresses towards the center. Fig. 3. GC/MS in the SIM mode was carried out for confirmation of all positive and ambiguous results obtained from GC analysis. GC/MS was effective as a multiresidue screening method for crops the mean recovery of trifluralin from green bean, cilantro, apple, tomato, and green onion at a fortification level of 0.25 mg kg was 55% and the LOD was 0.05 mg kg . ... [Pg.394]

The dlterpene lactone 17-acetoxyacanthoaustralide (25) has minor effects, showing promotion of clover (112%), cucumber (109%) and Palmer amaranth (111%) and inhibition of carrot germination (91%). The flavonoid artemetin (26) at 0.05 mM concentrations slightly affects onion (93%), oat (91%) and promotes seed germinations In carrot (116%) and Palmer amaranth (113%). In closing, it is noteworthy to point out that lettuce and cress are not significantly affected by all ten sesquiterpene lactones as well as the dlterpene (25) and artemetin (26). [Pg.145]

Another very common phytochemical isolated was phytol (3,7,11, 15-tetramethyl-2-hexadecen-l-ol), the diterpenoid alcohol which forms the "tail" of chlorophyll. This compound is nearly insoluble in water, but when applied as a 0.1 mM (0.003 wt. %) solution in 0.1% DMS0 it increased onion germination while decreasing germination in sorghum, wheat, and carrot. The germination effects are significant at only the 95% level, but pretreatment studies are planned as part of other terpene chemistry studies at SRRC and LSI). [Pg.293]

After use, herbicides decompose slowly, and so affect cultivated plants for many years. In 1990, investigations in many regions of the USSR detected herbicides phytotoxic effects, especially among the si/m-triazine class, on different cultivars in many varied situations [13]. These sym-triazine herbicides, such as protrazin, simazin, atrazine, metazin, and prometrin, were used in different oblasts of the Ukraine, Kirgizia, Kazakhstan, Russia and Moldavia in previous years, especially on corn. Residual herbicide aftereffects led to the suppression and death of crops such as winter wheat, oats, barley, rye, potatoes, beets and sugar beets, linen, onions, watermelons and other melons, and sunflowers. [Pg.114]

Enantiomers of the same compound may have differing threshold values. This property was observed for a new, strong and high impact, flavor compound, 3-thio-2-methylpentan-l-ol, first detected in thermally processed materials but that is actually present in raw onions.54 First of all, there is a marked concentration effect at 1 ppm in 5% saltwater, the odor is described as sulfuric, burnt gum, sweaty, onion and at 0.5 ppb as meat broth, sweaty, onion, leek . Since there are two chiral centers (both dependent on carbon) there are four stereoisomers, all of which have been prepared 18a, 18b, 19a, 19b (Scheme 7). For this compound, enantiomers have the following marked differences in odor thresholds (but apparently all have the same general odor). [Pg.684]

As well as the TDF content, the proportion between SDF and IDF is an important nutritional parameter because of the different physiological effects that these exert. Proportions of SDF are characteristically high in fruits and vegetables, although they can differ considerably. SDF is less than 20% of TDF in grape but more than 30% in onion and higher than 50% in fig. [Pg.226]
