Oligo chromophores

Electrostatic self-assembly was combined with supramolecular chemistry to obtain inclusion complexes of a polymeric nonlinear optical (NLO) active dye and modified [3-cyclodextrin with induced chromophore orientation [37], The polyanion is a N,N-diallyl-aniline and sodium-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonate copolymer functionalized with pendant azo group. The modified /i-cyclodextrin oligo-cation was obtained by treatment of hcptakis(6-dco y-6-iodo-/i-cyclodcxtrin) with excess pyridine. A linear polyamine, chitosan, was also combined with the polyanion, for comparison. Films were deposited on glass slides by dipping them alternatively in aqueous solutions of the cation and the polyanion. UV-visible spectra indicate dye aggregation and suggest the formation of an inclusion complex of the dye with the cyclodextrin, thus isolating the chromophores. [Pg.210]

Schanze and Sauer were the first to report a detailed study of long-range photoinduced ET in a series of metal-organic dyads [94]. These authors synthesized dyads 50a-e (Scheme 22 and Table 4) that comprise a Ru(diimine) + chromophore covalently linked to a p-benzoquinone acceptor using a series of oligo-L-proline peptide spacers. Oligo-proline peptide spacers are used because previous studies suggest that these peptides are conformationally restricted and... [Pg.116]

Monodisperse oligo(phenylenevinylene)s are assembled to three-dimensional scaffolds in convergent three- or fourfold Homer reactions of a silane core and stilbenoid aldehydes in moderate to good yields. The central silane is sensitive toward nucleophilic attack. Tetrahedral compounds with short side chains form stable amorphous films but trigonal-pyramidal shaped assemblies tend to recrystallize. The connection of the chromophores to a central silicon atom results in a stabilization of the excited states an intense blue-green fluorescence is emitted from solution as well as from transparent films. [Pg.537]

Summary A synthetic route to highly fluorescent organic semiconductors with rigid connections to curable alkoxysilanes is described. The title compounds are prepared via Heck reactions of monodisperse bromo-OPVs with allyl-alkoxysilanes. A combined extension of the Jt-system and coimection with alkoxysilanes is possible when an alkoxysilyl-styrene is used as a substrate. Hydrolysis and condensation of alkoxysilanes yields linear and cyclic oligo-OPV-siloxanes or three-dimensional networks, thus allowing the transformation of small molecules into luminescent materials with well-defined chromophores. [Pg.539]

Kimura, et al. synthesized polymers bearing oligo-aromatic esters as side chains to form second-order nonlinear optical active polymers on the basis of architecture. The cut-off wavelength ( co) of these polymers is shorter than the visible region, i.e., kco ca. 330-370 nm, which are much shorter than the typical second order nonlinear optics polymer containing chromophores like azobenzene. These polymer films exhibit good transparency in the visible region. The second-order nonlinear optical coefficient, is 2.2-9.S pm.V... [Pg.357]
