Old Style

Many refiners are still operating hydrogen plants that were designed and built 20 or more years ago. These older plants were generally designed with the best available technology of the time. These typical plants consist of a steam-methane reformer (SMR) to convert the hydrocarbon feed to a S5mgas

The right-hand side is now a pure number and, if we wish to plot mass, in grams, against, say, volume on a graph we label the mass axis m/g so that the values marked along the axis are pure numbers. Similarly, if we wish to tabulate a series of masses, we put m/g at the head of a column of what are now pure numbers. The old style of using m(g) is now seen to be incorrect as, algebraically, it could be interpreted only as m x g rather than m g, which we require.

PCB Polychlorinated biphenyls. Aka polychloro-biphenyls. Difficult to remediate chemical used in old-style transformers. Concentrated PCBs used to be referred to as "1268". 

Typically, a modem three-pass, dry-back, FT boiler requires only 5 sq ft of heating surface per boiler hp, which is 200% of the old style rating. Thus, the MCR of generated steam (Ib/hr or kg/hr) is a more sensible term to use. 

NOTE Condensate system corrosion was an inevitable result of old-style, carbonate cycle internal softening programs, commonly employed in HRT, economic, locomotive, Lancashire, and similar boilers.

We should make a habit of using the on-line help. The user interface of the help browser, which also works as a Web browser, is extremely intuitive, and it is highly recommended. When we mention the "help" command, that is just a general comment it does not mean that you have to use the old-style help. To use help in the Command Window, turn the page display mode on first. Here s an example of seeking help on the print command with the old-style help ... 

An old-style accident investigation report would include only one or two recommendations, such as paint pool depths at the edges of the pool and add more lifeguards. 

A variety of techniques exist for driving legacy components. You can use the API if you re fortunate enough to have one, or you can generate and send SQL or similar queries if it is a database component. For a host-based terminal application, you can use screenscraping—pretend to be an old-style user terminal. These techniques should be encapsulated in middleware so that other components are not too dependent on the legacy communication. Whenever possible, buy the middleware components. 

It was noted that the original Wl theory (old-style SCF extrapolation) performed considerably more poorly for second-row than for first-row species. This was ascribed to the lack of balance in the basis sets for second-row atoms used in the SCF and valence correlation steps of Wl in particular, the A VTZ+2dlf basis set contains as many tight d and f functions as regular ones, which would appear to be a bit top-heavy. 

Compared to its prototype, the modification (the so-called Wl theory) did appear to yield improved results for second-row molecules. However, in the W1/W2 validation study [26] we found this to be an artifact of the exaggerated sensitivity of the (old-style) 3-point geometric SCF extrapolation. Use ofthenew-style Eoo+A/L5 extrapolation largely eliminates both the problem and the difference between Wl and Wl theory. 

As for the difference of about 0.4 kcal/mol between the old-style and new-style SCF extrapolations in Wlh and W1 theories, comparison with the W2h SCF limits clearly suggests the new-style extrapolation to be the more reliable one. (The two extrapolations yield basically the same result in W2h.) This should not be seen as an indication that the Eoo + A/L5 formula is somehow better founded theoretically, but rather as an example of why reliance on (aug-)cc-pVDZ data should be avoided if at all possible. Users who prefer the geometric extrapolation for the SCF component could consider carrying out a direct SCF calculation in the extra large (i.e. V5Z) basis set and applying the Eoo + A/BL extrapolation to the medium , large , and extra large SCF data. 

Reports received by Hoechst Marion Roussel have prompted the company to return to the old-style labeling that includes the total volume data. According to the firm, this change will be implemented as quickly as possible. 

Serif This is an example of Century. This is an example of Book Antiqua. This is an example of Bookman Old Style. This is an example of Times New Roman. 

Lindane (gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane) is one of the last of the old style organochlorine pesticides still in use. Use of organochlorines such as DDT, aldrin, dieldrin, heptachlor, and toxaphene is restricted or banned in many countries because of their persistence in the environment, bioaccumulation, and toxicity. Lindane was first isolated in 1825 along with other similar compounds, but its deadly effects on insects were not recognized until the 1940s. 

In this chapter, we review the pharmacology of several selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors [SSRIs] and other drugs that act on the serotonergic system. That these developments have enhanced safety and tolerability is now beyond dispute, but it is also clear that these agents are no more effective than the old-style tricyclic antidepressants [TCAs]. [For a comprehensive discussion of serotonergic medication, see Montgomery, Chapter 12, in this volume.] Here, several compounds are discussed in detail. 

Joseph Priestley was born in Fieldhead, a tiny hamlet near Leeds, on March 13 (old style), 1733, and was therefore about one and one-half years older than that other great pioneer in pneumatic chemistry, Mr. Henry Cavendish. Although Priestley and Cavendish had similar scientific interests, their lives and personalities offered the greatest possible contrast. Since Priestley s mother died when he was only six years old. he was entrusted to the care of an aunt, Mrs. Keighley, of whom he afterward said that she knew no other use of wealth, or of talents of any kind, than to do good (21). 

Dates are given in Old Style, except the year is taken to begin on i January. References to the Annals include the page and date of the record. References to the casebooks include volume numbers and the name and date heading a consultation, omitting folio references unless the dated records are out of sequence. 

Incidentally, the way to measure surface temperatures in the field is with an infrared handheld thermometer. The response time of these thermometers is infinitely faster than in old-style, contact thermometers. You can buy one from any good instrument catalog1 for a few hundred dollars.

As is well known, and especially for the old-style Vin Santo, these wines have a generally high alcohol content (14% and above) that is combined with different low levels of residual sugar, referring to these wines as semi-dry or dry styles that are ideal after meals. A slightly sweet style (amabile) and sweet style (dolce) is also produced, which are appreciated at their best after a dessert, or accompanying the dessert itself. 

Elsewhere in the Cookbook these will be referred to as old-style emulsions. 

Factors that can increase graininess are over-vigorous agitation during development with old-style emulsions, solutions that vary more than 2 degrees, storage at high temperature and overexposure in the camera. 

Efke 400 is the discontinued Agfa APX 400 and is a conventional-grain emulsion, not an old-style emulsion as are the other three Efke films.There is some speculation that it will soon be available under the Adox label as ADX 400. 

With old-style emulsions, such as Efke 25, 50, and 100, it was possible to use methods found in the 2nd edition of the Cookbook, such as the Hydrogen Peroxide Pushing Method or Acetic Acid Intensification, to create a true increase in film speed. Unfortunately, modern emulsions, whether they are conventional or flat-grained, rely on color dye sensitization to achieve their sensitivity as much as upon silver sensitivity. Color dyes do not respond to these speed increasing techniques. Hydrogen peroxide will do little or nothing and acetic acid latensification may ruin your film. I no longer recommend either. 

The best papers to use with amidol developer are old-style, soft emulsion papers, such as those with minimal hardener, silver-rich papers (papers without excessive dye sensitization), graded bromide papers, long-scale chloride papers, or specially coated papers such as David Lewis Bromoil Paper (see Resources). With any other paper, which is to say most modern chlorobromide papers, amidol works just as well, though not necessarily better than most other developing agents, or combination of developing agents—thus the controversy. 

The 6-T system consists of three separate bleaches, three separate toners, a sodium chloride solution, plus a gold-tone modifier. By mixing and matching the various bleaches and toners, and throwing in the chloride bath and/or the modifier, a large variety of tones can be achieved from purplish-brown to a bright sunlit sepia. This system works best with old-style soft emulsion papers. (Formulas Toners DuPont 6-TToning System)... 

Ph.D. chemists joining the pharmaceutical industry in America come, literally, from all over the world (one of the great strengths in America). The support and technical personnel usually come from more local universities and technical schools. Most need quite a bit of training in the practical chemistry techniques and most have had no, or little, experience in working, like the old-style apprentice, in industrial laboratories, particularly with the kind of thinking and modern instrumentation needed to address problems in a multidisciplinary and quantitative way. 

Such research councils existed many years ago in the old style chemical majors, such as ICI, BASF and Bayer. The difference now is that the people deciding the choice and future of projects are business leaders and not research managers.
