Our SRM results are also consistent with 30 years of test data from a variety of sources (Table 1). Accident Proneness. Tlie old notion that certain people are accident-prone has been difficult to establish as fact. A more acceptable concept may be "accident liability," which can be related to factors tliat often are temporary and do not depend primarily on persoiuality traits, such as w ork situation or stress. 

In an obituaiy talk given at the Physical Society of Berlin in 1889, Hermann Helmholtz stressed that Clausius s strict formulation of the mechanical heat theory is one of the most surprising and interesting achievements of the old and new physics, because of the absolute generality independent of the nature of the physical body and since it establishes new, unforeseen relations between different branches of physics. 

This point was made clearly by Wong, Cowan Farquhar (1985). Data analysis routines may change with time, and it is desirable to be able to reanalyze old data with new analysis software. By weaning at eight weeks old, compared with the extreme of two weeks old, which is done conventionally, the piglet is subjected to less of a sudden dietary change, because by this age more than 50% of its diet is likely to be creep feed. Both the sow and the piglets are also less liable to be stressed by the separation. 

In addition to the classical stress hormones already reviewed, several other hormones are augmented in response to stress. Stress-induced prolactin release is one of the most frequently studied examples. There is no doubt about the causal relationship between stress and increased pituitary prolactin release, but the biological meaning is much less clear (G2). This phylogenetically old hormone has been shown to have more than 85 different functions in all vertebrate species. However, besides its role in the induction of maternal lactogenesis, the physiological importance of prolactin is at present not fully established. Experimental and clinical evidence supports the view that prolactin is also an immunoregulating hormone (M44, R18). Prolactin receptors are present on human T and B lymphocytes (R18), and T lymphocytes depend on prolactin for maintenance of immunocompetence (B19). Famphur use on livestock is contraindicated for less than 3-month-old calves animals stressed from castration, dehorning, or overexcitement and sick or convalescent animals. Brahman and Brahman crossbreeds are less tolerant of cholinesterase-inhibiting insecticides than other breeds, and Brahman bulls are especially sensitive and should not be treated with famphur. Cattle should not be slaughtered for at least 35 days after treatment with famphur. 

Why bother with all the neurobiology of the human brain, when trying to understand stress Because the old dogma that our brain remains a stable, unchanging, hardwired black box has to be revised.
