The alcohols occur in oil of rose and other flower essences. They have geranium or rose odors and are important perfume ingredients. The aldehydes have much stronger citruslike odors and occur as major or minor constituents in many essential oils, such as oil of citronella, oil of lemon, and so on. 

Phenylethyl alcohol has a roselike odor and occurs in the volatile oils of rose, orange flowers, and others. It is an oily liquid and is much used in perfume formulation.

Perillene, a monoterpenoid furan derived from p-myreene, is a eonstituent of the essential oil obtained from Perilla citridora (Labiatae) among other monoterpenes, it also occurs in the pheromones of some mites and acts as a defense pheromone of the ant Lasius fulginosus. Terpenoid pyran derivatives include diastereomeric rose oxides [(2/ ,4/ )-trans- and (2S,4R)-cis-] as well as racemic nerol oxide, which essentially contribute to the pleasantly flowery green smell of the Bulgarian oil of rose... 

Many pairs of enantiomers are reported to exemplify the enantioselectivity of the sense of smell. Traditional use Fruits are widely used as a tonic, choleretic, and as a remedy for scurvy. An infusion of the fruits with honey is used to treat upper respiratory colds and coughs. A decoction of the roots is drunk to treat diarrhea. A decoction of the leaves is taken to treat dysentery and as a diuretic (Khodzhimatov 1989). The hips from this and related species are used to prevent scurvy and avitaminosis, to treat arteriosclerosis, cholecystitis, hepatitis, and gastrointestinal diseases, particularly with reduced bile production (Altimishev 1991). Oil of rose is used externally to treat cracked and injured nipples of breast feeding women, bedsores, trophic ulcers of the shins, and dermatosis (Muravyova 1978). The fruits are used to treat lung tuberculosis, diphtheria, scarlet fever, flu, and sore throat (Zakordonets 1953). 

Powdered soaps, named after their respective perfumes, are much esteemed as shaving soaps by the fastidious and perhaps the so-called rose soap, perfumed with oil of rose and tinted by vermilion, may be considered one of the most delicate preparations, provided that it has been made from a good white tallow soap free from cocoa-nut oil. 

The E isomer of this alcohol, named geraniol, is a major component of the oils of rose, citronella, and lemongrass. 

Geraniol, as Its name Implies, occurs in oil of geranium but also constitutes about 50% of rose oil, the extract of rose petals. Farnesol, which occurs In the essential oils of rose and cyclamen, has a pleasing lily-of-the-valley odor. Both geraniol and farnesol are used in making perfumes.
