Off-Line Analyses

Off-line analysis of stored data review of the stored data, organize data in different presentation windows, plot AE and plant parameters data so as to enable comparison and coirelation with the possibility to present data (histogram of AE events vs position, plant parameters and/or AE parameters vs time) conditioned in terms of time interval (initial time, final time) and/or position interval (defined portion of the component = initial coordinate, final coordinate) and/or plant parameters intervals (one or more plant parameters = initial value, final value). [Pg.70]

An extraction plant should operate at steady state in accordance with the flow-sheet design for the process. However, fluctuation in feed streams can cause changes in product quaUty unless a sophisticated system of feed-forward control is used (103). Upsets of operation caused by flooding in the column always force shutdowns. Therefore, interface control could be of utmost importance. The plant design should be based on (/) process control (qv) decisions made by trained technical personnel, (2) off-line analysis or limited on-line automatic analysis, and (J) control panels equipped with manual and automatic control for motor speed, flow, interface level, pressure, temperature, etc. [Pg.72]

Application of rotating coiled columns has become attractive for preparative-scale separations of various substances from different samples (natural products, food and environmental samples) due to advantages over traditional liquid-liquid extraction methods and other chromatographic techniques. The studies mainly made during the last fifteen years have shown that using rotating coiled columns is also promising for analytical chemistry, particularly for the extraction, separation and pre-concentration of substances to be determined (analytes) before their on-line or off-line analysis by different determination techniques. [Pg.247]

Statistical process control (SPC) is an important on-line method in real time by which a production process can be monitored and control plans can be initiated to keep quality standards within acceptable limits. Statistical quality control (SQC) provides off-line analysis of the big picture such as what was the impact of previous improvements. It is important to understand how SPC and SQC operate. [Pg.334]

The scheme given in Fig. 2.1 represents normal analytical procedures in off-line analysis. It contains all the steps that must be considered in principle. However, there could be reasons to reduce the course of action. Not in all cases is the analyst able to take samples by himself or check the sampling procedure. Sometimes he or she must accept a situation in which he or she has to receive a given sample (e.g., in extreme cases, extraterrestrial samples, autopsy matter). [Pg.41]

Off-line analysis, controller design, and optimization are now performed in the area of dynamics. The largest dynamic simulation has been about 100,000 differential algebraic equations (DAEs) for analysis of control systems. Simulations formulated with process models having over 10,000 DAEs are considered frequently. Also, detailed training simulators have models with over 10,000 DAEs. On-line model predictive control (MPC) and nonlinear MPC using first-principle models are seeing a number of industrial applications, particularly in polymeric reactions and processes. At this point, systems with over 100 DAEs have been implemented for on-line dynamic optimization and control. [Pg.87]

First and most importantly, real-time NIR monitoring enabled real-time control of the process. For a given product, the molecular weight and end-group balance in the prepolymer exiting the front end or melt part of the process must be controlled at specified levels in order for the back end or solid-phase part of the process to successfully produce the intended polymer composition. In addition, the variability in prepolymer composition must be controlled with very tight tolerances to keep the variation in final product composition within specification limits. Since the process dynamics in the front end were more rapid than those in conventional PET processes, the conventional analytical approach involving off-line analysis of samples obtained every 2-A hours was not sufficient to achieve the desired product quality. [Pg.516]

The analytical strategy for a continuous process is necessarily predominantly online, as summarised in Figure 8.3. However, the correlations between continuous process development and online analysis on the one hand and batch process development and off-line analysis on the other are not simple. For example, many aspects of batch process development would benefit from the availability of online analysis and monitoring. Similarly, some of the early development stages of a continuous process will utilise data from batch (i.e. non-continuous) experiments. [Pg.248]

The gases left the reactor at the bottom and flew to a 4-way valve. The tubes after the reactor were heated with heating jackets (60-80°C). The products were either analysed on-line or collected in a condenser for off-line analysis (Varian 3400 gas chromatograph with a packed column, 10% OV-17 on chromosorb W detector TCD). [Pg.414]

Bioanalyzer can be considered another version of commercial biosensors for off-line analysis. It was developed to have capabilities of complete analysis, short response time, specificity, and sensitivity that allows a quick clinical test. Abbott Vision, Boehringer-Mannheim Reflectron, and Kodak Ektachem DT60 (IBI Biolyzer is the new name) are used for cholesterol measurement in doctors offices. Bioanalyzer consists of biological and transducing component that are not physically connected. The uniqueness of this separation provides the versatility of analysis, i.e., use of disposable and different biological component for multi-components measurements. In authors laboratory, Kodak Ektachem DT60 was used successfully to determine cholesterol in some food matrices as well as in off-line process control. The analysis time was only 10 minutes compared to 1-2 days for the GC and HPLC methods. Complicated... [Pg.338]

Third, it can be difficult to match the results from samples removed for off-line analysis (reference values) with the right spectra. If the system is changing rapidly, removed samples may be quenched incompletely and continue to react. This will introduce bias into reference values. Careful procedures must be developed to minimize bias between on-line and off-line results. [Pg.149]

Wenz and colleagues at Bayer Polymers Inc. describe the use of Raman spectroscopy to monitor the progress of a graft emulsion polymerization process, specifically the manufacture of ABS graft copolymer, in order to select the appropriate reaction termination point.40 Early termination reduces product yield and results in an extra product purification step termination too late reduces product quality. As Figure 5.5 illustrates, the reaction composition over time is not smooth and predictable, making it unlikely that off-line analysis would ever be fast enough to ensure correct control decisions. [Pg.150]

The available data from emulsion polymerization systems have been obtained almost exclusively through manual, off-line analysis of monomer conversion, emulsifier concentration, particle size, molecular weight, etc. For batch systems this results in a large expenditure of time in order to sample with sufficient frequency to accurately observe the system kinetics. In continuous systems a large number of samples are required to observe interesting system dynamics such as multiple steady states or limit cycles. In addition, feedback control of any process variable other than temperature or pressure is impossible without specialized on-line sensors. This note describes the initial stages of development of two such sensors, (one for the monitoring of reactor conversion and the other for the continuous measurement of surface tension), and their implementation as part of a computer data acquisition system for the emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate. [Pg.500]

Capillary-in-capillary mixers were used for electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), which allows one to perform on-line kinetic studies for a wide range of applications in chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, isotope exchange experiments and enzymology, just to name a few [133], ESI-MS is a method alternative to the traditionally employed quench-flow techniques with off-line analysis. [Pg.150]

The impact of several factors on the MMLLE extraction yield of PAHs in water has been comprehensively studied using a flowing FS-MMLLE system and off-line analysis with GC-flame ionization detection (GC-FID).84 The flowing FS-MMLLE procedure combined with off-line GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis has been utilized for the extraction of nonionic and derivatized ionic organotin compounds in river water.85... [Pg.84]

In a follow-up study, the same authors examined the applicability of the same device for relevant protein samples and investigated the main contributions to band broadening [82]. As a consequence of the small depth of the beds, zone spreading caused by Joule heating was shown to be negligible (see Sect. 3.1.1). Cross fields of up to 100 V/cm were applied for the separation of human serum albumin, ribonuclease A and bradykinin. The feasibility of fraction collection was demonstrated with four collected fractions of a whole rat plasma sample. Off-line analysis of these four isolated fractions by CE indicated the separation of serum albumins and globulins. [Pg.78]
