Occupational health organized labor

The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) covers a broad range of issues relating to worker health and safety, many of which impact the power generation industry (16,17). The Act sets standards designed to protect worker health and safety, particularly in industrial settings. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration, organized under the U.S. Department of Labor, implements and enforces OSHA standards and periodically updates poHcies governing worker health and safety.

OSHA, Several organizations provide leadership for occupational health and safety initiatives in industry. In the United States, the key agency is the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), founded in 1970 under the U.S. Department of Labor. The purpose of OSHA is to make sure that workplace conditions ensure the health and safety of employees. OSHA sets and enforces safety and health standards for industry and provides education and training. Although OSHA is a federal agency, it monitors state programs to be sure they meet or exceed federal standards. 

International Labour Organization. Global industry is affected by occupational health and safety initiatives. The International Labour Organization was founded in 1914 and is part of the United Nations it supports decent treatment of all workers. It provides international labor standards and oversees their implementation. The organization promotes social justice consistent with human rights in a safe and healthful workplace. 

Occupational safety is about creating a safe work environment, as well as an understanding, to facilitate the positive physical, mental, and social well-being of woikers. A common definition of occupational health was adopted by the Joint International Labor Organization and World Health Organization Committee on Occupational Health at its first session in 1950, and it was revised at its twelfth session in 1995. Current occupational exposure to 1,2-dichloroethane in North America occurs predominantly during the manufacture of other chemicals, such as vinyl chloride, where 1,2-dichloroethane is used as an intermediate. In a 1982 National Occupational Exposure Survey by the United States National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), 28% of employees working with adhesives and solvents were exposed to 1,2-dichloroethane, while between 5 and 9% of workers were exposed to the substance in the medicinals and botanicals, biological products, petroleum refining and organic chemicals industries, and in museums and art galleries (United States Department of Labor, 1989). 

Labor activist Tony Mazzocchi of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers organized a series of public forums, giving workers a platform for testifying about hazardous conditions in the industrial workplace. Mazzocchi compiled a formal record of the forums, to pressure Congress to enact the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA). In 1970, OSHA became the first federal law aimed at protecting the health of the nation s workforce. 

The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHAct) is administered and enforced by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Both OSH A and OSHAct were created in December 1970, the same month the US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) was created. Unlike the US EPA, OSHA is essentially an enforcement organization and most of its employees are inspectors who perform thousands of workplace inspections per year it is a division of the Department of Labor. The OSHAct assures, as far as possible, that all working men or women have risk-free working environments and imposes on employers the obligation to provide employees with workplaces that are free from recognized health and safety hazards and to maintain compliance with specific OSHA standards. 

The AIHA has 12 000 members, making it one of the largest international associations of occupational and environmental health professionals. Members include professionals practicing industrial hygiene in industry, government, labor, academic institutions, and independent organizations. A variety of membership categories exist, based on area or practice and level of experience in the field.
