Although O-Ring sizes are not identical. Connections 850 and 855 are interchangeable. Means of retaining O-Ring may be used, provided interchangeability with 855 is maintained. Yoke must clear this dimension freely.

For the larger sizes in high-pressure service, the fixed-ball type with O-ring seat seals requires less operating effort. However, these require two different plastic materi s with resistance to the fluid and its temperature. Like plug cocks, ball valves may be either restricted-port or full-port, but the ports are always round and pressure drop is low.

The filter structure consists of a stack of plates attached to a hollow shaft which are mounted inside a pressure vessel with each plate covered with a suitable filter medium. The slurry is fed under pressure into the vessel and the cake, which is retained by the filter medium, forms on the top of each plate whilst the filtrate passes through the hollow shaft further to the process. Filter sizes may vary but generally the maximum is 60 m area and designed for a 6 bar operating pressure. Each circular plate in the stack is constructed with radial ribs that are welded to the bottom and support a horizontal coarse mesh screen which is covered with a finer woven metal screen or filter cloth to retain the cake. The bottom of the plate slopes towards the hollow central shaft which lets the filtrate flow freely through circumferential holes and further down the shaft to the filtrate outlet. The clearance between the plates is maintained by special spacers with "o" rings to positively seal between the slurry that surrounds the plates and the shaft that collects the filtrate. The height of the spacers determine the clearance for cake build-up and may be replaced to meet various process conditions. 

Valves of all sizes which are only used occasionally will he sealed with O rings. As a safeguard against leakage, they have no handwheel fitted and the stem is provided with a covering cap which is only removed when the valve is to he operated. The stem will have flats for operation hy a spanner. Most such valves can he hack-seated to permit changing the O rings. 

The effect of lactone ring-size on the inhibition was studied, for N-acetyl-)3-D-glucosaminidase from bovine epididymis, with lactones and lactone derivatives unable to undeigo ring-isomerization, by Pokomy and co-workers. From a comparison of Kj values for 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-glu-cono-1,5-lactone (0.45 nM) with the 1,4-lactone (4.5 fiM) and of Kj for the methyl ) -furanoside with that for the pyranose (4 mM), it was concluded that the 1,4-lactone has an 10-fold lower inhibitory potency than the 1,5-lactone. Intramolecular reactions usually dominate intermolecular addition for favorable ring sizes. Semiempirical (AMI) calculations found the intramolecular TS favorable to a comparable intermolecular reaction.68 (See Figure 4.1) The intramolecular TS, which is nearly 4 kcal/mol more stable, is quite productlike with a C—O bond distance of 1.6 A, and a bond order of 0.62. The bromonium ion bridging is unsymmetrical and fairly weak. The bond parameters for the intra- and intermolecular TSs are quite similar. 

Benzyl carbamates have been used to form both five- and six-membered nitrogen-containing rings. The selectivity for N over O nucleophilicity in these cases is the result of the nitrogen being able to form a better ring size (5 or 6 versus 7 or 8) than the carbonyl oxygen. 

The chromium-catalyzed coupling is extended to the intramolecular cycli-zation to the dials 43. The O-chelating silyl scavenger is used to control the stereoselectivity as shown in Scheme 25 [61,62]. The ring size effect on the stereoselectivity is also investigated.
