Nomenclature, developments

There is no systematic nomenclature developed for molecular sieve materials. The discoverer of a synthehc species based on a characteristic X-ray powder diffraction pattern and chemical composihon typicaUy assigns trivial symbols. The early syn-thehc materials discovered by Milton, Breck and coworkers at Uruon Carbide used the modem Lahn alphabet, for example, zeoHtes A, B, X, Y, L. The use of the Greek alphabet was inihated by Mobil and Union Carbide with the zeoHtes alpha, beta, omega. Many of the synthetic zeoHtes which have the structural topology of mineral zeoHte species were assigned the name of the mineral, for example, syn-thehc mordenite, chabazite, erionite and offretite. The molecular sieve Hterature is replete with acronyms ZSM-5, -11, ZK-4 (Mobil), EU-1, FU-1, NU-1 (ICI), LZ-210, AlPO, SAPO, MeAPO, etc. (Union Carbide, UOP) and ECR-1 (Exxon). The one pubHcaHon on nomenclature by lUPAC in 1979 is Hmited to the then-known zeoHte-type materials [3]. [Pg.2]

Another system of nomenclature, developed with the cooperation of the editors of the Journal of the Chemical Society (London), will be found in Brough et al. [7], It is reasonably simple and straightforward. Another system is used by Spence et al. [8],... [Pg.429]

Another use for the zero integer superscript occurs in the domain of catenanes and rotaxanes. Although the same examples as the ones cited in Schill s monograph [1] for the development of a suitable nomenclature have been selected for discussion, his organizational scheme — which is merely an extension of I.U.P.A.C. s organic chemistry nomenclature — has not been. Instead, the nomenclature developed earlier for more traditional compounds is easily expandable to include these "compounds". Toward this end, note that in the formulation described in Chapter 1, the semi-colon was selected as a co-ordinate separator and the colon as a sub-ordinate separator of strings of nomenclature code. One now needs only to introduce the use of the zero superscript to indicate that the choice of locant numbering is irrelevant. [Pg.258]

Gas phase ceramic synthesis is the subject of several review papers. The treatment here is analogous to that in Magan [1], Friedlander [2], and Pratsinis and Kodas [3] but instead of using the traditional aerosol nomenclature, this chapter uses the nomenclature developed in Chapter 3 on population balances for educational continuity. Each of the gas phase powder synthesis methods is summarized in Table 7.1. The maximum temperatures are also listed. The adiabatic flame temperature is the maximum possible temperature achieved in flame synthesis and will depend on the concentration of reactants in the feed. Powder synthesis in a furnace uses conduction, convection, and radiation, giving a maximum temperature of 2300 K. A plasma is an ionized gas. High velocity electrons remove other electrons from the neutral gas molecules present in the plasma, thereby producing ions and electrons that sustain the plasma. [Pg.257]

Nomenclature before Werner (to 1897)- The Lavoisierian system of nomenclature, even with the Berzelius modifications, provided no suitable names for that class of compounds which later was designated coordination compounds. Names based on the patterns for double salts and addition compounds were not satisfactory because the properties of these materials were not those consistent with the patterns provided. Consequently, names based on properties, especially color (Table I), or the names of prominent investigators became popular (2) because they, at least, did not commit the user to any theory of their structure. The developments in organic chemistry after 1860 did not contribute to the understanding of these strange compounds, so there was no carry-over to them of the nomenclature developments in organic chemistry. [Pg.148]

Usual names, or taken from the nomenclature developed in Saveant s group. [Pg.196]

The convenience of indexers is not a primary consideration for nomenclature development. Here is a conflict requiring resolution. The obvious step is to define the limits within which the additive and the substitutive principle are severally preferable, unless all indexers adopt a ciphering system where such problems do not arise and the field is left clear for cursive text. [Pg.52]

Howard S. Nutting has been a dynamic factor in stimulating and organizing chemical nomenclature work in America and abroad in recent years. As chairman of the Committee on the Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry of the ACS Division of Organic Chemistry for the years 1946-51 he has brought nomenclature development and standardization forward rapidly. [Pg.57]

Nomenclature development is slow work the workers are usually busy men with much else to do. Sometimes there is need for early decisions. These facts have, to a degree, been stumbling blocks in the attaining of international agreement. Nomenclature work within a nation is much prolonged when put on an international basis. Usually, however, the effort is worth while. It is not practicable and, perhaps, not desirable for everything in the nomenclature field to be done on an international basis, as some more or less specific problems are largely local in interest. [Pg.63]

Bamford et al. ( 1 ) have presented the basic kinetics for free-radical polymerization of styrene, and Hamielec et al., (2 ) employing Bamford s nomenclature, developed differential equations that are the starting point for the mathematical model. [Pg.14]

Develop the state model for a multicomponent (C components) nonideal distillation column with N trays. Use the general nomenclature developed in Example 4.13 for the ideal binary distillation. [Pg.422]

This document acknowledges that nomenclature develops - without regulated definition - as the field of thermal analysis develops. Some terms used by authors and scientists rapidly become accepted by the scientific community, even if the term is not consistent with past definitions, science or grammatically correct. However, if such a term is widely used and understood, it is reported here. [Pg.15]

The arguments used by Woodward and Hoffmann (1969) are based on the symmetry properties of orbitals. Initially they employed the frontier orbital approach, as outlined above, but subsequently developed Longuet-Higgins and Abrahamson s method (1965) which utilized a group theoretical analysis. It is not in our interests, and neither is it necessary, to apply Group Theory in its full rigour in particular we shall use the simplified system of nomenclature developed previously (see p, 14). [Pg.109]
