Silver German

The metal is employed to form numerous alloys with other metals. Brass, nickel silver, typewriter metal, commercial bronze, spring bronze, German silver, soft solder, and aluminum solder are some of the more important alloys. [Pg.54]

Nickel [7440-02-0] Ni, recognized as an element as early as 1754 (1), was not isolated until 1820 (2). It was mined from arsenic sulfide mineral deposits (3) and first used in an alloy called German Silver (4). Soon after, nickel was used as an anode in solutions of nickel sulfate [7786-81 A] NiSO, and nickel chloride [7718-54-9] NiCl, to electroplate jewelry. Nickel carbonyl [13463-39-3] Ni(C02)4, was discovered in 1890 (see Carbonyls). This material, distilled as a hquid, decomposes into carbon monoxide and pure nickel powder, a method used in nickel refining (5) (see Nickel and nickel alloys). [Pg.9]

Copper and tin phosphides are used as deoxidants in the production of the respective metals, to increase the tensile strength and corrosion resistance in phosphor bronze [12767-50-9] and as components of brazing solders (see Solders and brazing alloys). Phosphor bronze is an alloy of copper and 1.25—11 wt % tin. As tin may be completely oxidized in a copper alloy in the form of stannic oxide, 0.03—0.35 wt % phosphoms is added to deoxidize the alloy. Phosphor copper [12643-19-5] is prepared by the addition of phosphoms to molten copper. Phosphor tin [66579-64-4] 2.5—3 wt % P, is made for the deoxidation of bronzes and German silver. [Pg.378]

The non-ferrous alloys include the misleadingly named nickel silver (or German silver) which contains 10-30% Ni, 55-65% Cu and the rest Zn when electroplated with silver (electroplated nickel silver) it is familiar as EPNS tableware. Monel (68% Ni, 32% Cu, traces of Mn and Fe) is used in apparatus for handling corrosive materials such as F2 cupro-nickels (up to 80% Cu) are used for silver coinage Nichrome (60% Ni, 40% Cr), which has a very small temperature coefficient of electrical resistance, and Invar, which has a very small coefficient of expansion are other well-known Ni alloys. Electroplated nickel is an ideal undercoat for electroplated chromium, and smaller amounts of nickel are used as catalysts in the hydrogenation of unsaturated vegetable oils and in storage batteries such as the Ni/Fe batteries. [Pg.1146]

Many people are fooled when they buy Mexican or German silver jewelry, thinking they are purchasing a semiprecious metal. These forms of silver jewelry go under many names, including Mexican silver, German silver, Afghan silver, Austrian silver, Brazilian silver, Nevada silver, Sonara silver, Tyrol silver, Venetian silver, or just the name silver with quotes around it. Apparatus in which fluorine is to be handled at room temperature may be made from a number of metals. Platinum, copper, nickel, magnesium, monel metal, brass, steel, and German silver are all known to be satisfactory. Most of these become coated with a film of fluoride which prevents further corrosion. If the metal is in contact not only with fluorine but also with a liquid such as water or hydrogen fluoride, corrosion frequently becomes troublesome. Under such circumstances, platinum usually behaves in the most satisfactory manner. With the gas alone, brass needle valves may be used with success, but the packing is eventually ruined. The alloy of zinc with copper is termed brass, pinchbeck, Muntz metal, and tombac. English brass usually contains 70 per cent, of copper and 30 of zinc. It is made by melting the copper and adding the molten zinc. The addition of nickel (Cu 52 per cent., Zn 23 per cent., Ni 13 per cent.) yields German silver, of which spoons, forks, and coins are made. Sheffield plate silver is copper with a thin coating of silver. Close plating involves silver foil over iron or steel. German silver actually contains no silver. It is composed of 50% copper, 25% nickel, and 25% zinc, and is often used as a base for electroplating. Paktong is a similar form of nickel-silver that originated in China, for which the ratios of the metals is uncertain. [Pg.29]

Brass (copper + zinc) and bronze (copper + tin) are the most common and widely used alloys of copper. There are many different formulae for these alloys, and the percentages of each metal used varied according to the properties that were desired in the end product, and what was available to the metal workers in a given place. German silver is another copper-based alloy (Cu + Ni + Zn). Lattan is a copper-based alloy used for casting, but the ratios of its component metals are uncertain. [Pg.29]

The electro-deposition of cobalt from either of the foregoing solutions on to brass, iron, steel, copper, tin, lead, Britannia metal, and German silver may be effected under conditions similar to those employed for nickel. The deposit is firm, adherent, hard, and uniform. It is readily buffed to a finished surface having a beautiful lustre, possessing a slightly bluish cast, although beautifully white. [Pg.35]

Various alloys of nickel and copper are of great industrial importance. The two metals mix in all proportions, the nickel reducing the conductivity and increasing the hardness of the copper.
