NHDD project

This work has been done under Nuclear Hydrogen Development and Demonstration(NHDD) Project and we are grateful to MOST for financial help. 

The nuclear hydrogen program consists of two major projects the nuclear hydrogen key technologies development project and the NHDD project. Fig. 13.2 illustrates the plan of the nuclear hydrogen program. 

The NHDD project is aimed at the design and construction of a nuclear hydrogen demonstration system for demonstration of massive hydrogen production and system safety. A VHTR systems concept study has been performed for 3 years since 2011. The main objectives of this smdy are to develop the VHTR systems concept for nuclear process heat and electricity supply to industrial complexes, for the massive nuclear hydrogen production required to enter into a future clean hydrogen economy, and to establish the demonstration project plan of VHTR systems for subsequent commercialization. 

NHDD, which is proposed as a mid-term project, adopted a cooled vessel concept. The vessel material will be SA508/533 steel in which there are many experiences on forging, welding, etc. Analyses on the additional heat loss during normal operation and the peak temperature during accident confirm that the cooled vessel concept is applicable (Kim, M-H., 2008) until full manufacturing capability is developed for the high chromium steel vessel. 

In 2004, the KAERI together with the Korean Institute of Energy Research (KIER) and the Korean Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), received a contract from the MOST to launch the Project Nuclear Hydrogen Production Technology Development and Demonstration(NHDD) . The team selected the S-I process connected to a high temperature gas cooled reactor for further development and a demonstration. 

The system-type project like the NHDD is composed of a main project and several sub-group projects. The main project manages the R D activities of the sub-group projects including the development of research plans and the direction of the tasks. The main project also integrates the intersection of the programmatic and technical processes required for a programme coordination.
