Neutron activation analysis drawbacks

The chemistry of rare earth elements makes them particularly useful in studies of marine geochemistry [637]. But the determination of rare earths in seawater at ultratrace levels has always been a difficult task. Of the various methods applied, instrumental neutron activation analysis and isotope dilution mass spectrometry were the main techniques used for the determination of rare earths in seawater. However, sample preparation is tedious and large amounts of water are required in neutron activation analysis. In addition, the method can only offer relatively low sample throughputs and some rare earths cannot be determined. The main drawbacks of isotopic dilution mass spectrometry are that it is time-consuming and expensive, and monoisotopic elements cannot be determined as well. [Pg.214]

Neutron activation analysis (NAA), based on the interaction of the object material with fast neutrons, has been used in the identification and determination of the content of elements present in pigments, coins and alloys, stone, glass, and pottery [26]. Multi-elemental analysis (about 20 elements) can be performed on small samples off less than 5 mg, with sensitivities in the ppm range. The requirement of a nuclear reactor, the handling of radioactive materials, and the time-consuming procedures required for preparing the samples are the main drawbacks of this technique. [Pg.18]

Neutron Activation Spectrometry. Another instrumental technique which has applicability to a wide range of elements is neutron activation analysis. In this method the sample (which could be orange juice without any prior sample treatment) is irradiated with a strong neutron flux. The elements of analytical interest are thus converted to unstable isotopes which decay with characteristic energies and thus measurement of the intensities results in analytical values for the elements of interest. There are some serious drawbacks to this method, however. The matrix can cause severe background effects especially when the sample contains large amounts of an element, like potassium, which is the situation with orange juice. A variety of techniques based on different physical principles have been used for trace element measurements. The most commonly used include neutron activation analysis (NAA) [1], atomic absorption spectrometry [2,3], and mass spectrometry [4-7]. The two distinct advantages primarily responsible for the selection of NAA in earlier studies appeared to be the option to determine several trace elements simultaneously and the elimination of complex chemical separation steps. The poor precision values obtained by NAA have recently necessitated prechemical separation, which introduces problems of analyte loss, contamination, and blank correction. However, the major drawbacks are the requirement of a nuclear reactor facility, the slow turnaround of the samples, and the relatively high cost of analysis. Nonetheless, NAA is a well-established, multielemental, nondestructive technique with detection limits for most elements in the 1-50 p.g/liter range. The two main drawbacks of hair analysis are the need to remove external contamination if the body s internal hold-up is to be assessed and the need to digest the hair samples for most analytical methods (laser ablation and neutron activation techniques, discussed later, are notable exceptions).
