Neuroepithelial bodies

There are some indications that mammals possess at least two H2O2 sensors. One is located in cells of the lung neuroepithelial bodies, being responsible for constriction of the lung airways when the H2O2 level rises [6,7]. The other performs the same function in the blood vessels, being found in cells of the carotid body [8-10]. [Pg.233]

Neuroepithelial bodies found in mammalian airways have oxygen-sensitive K currents and are putative airway chemoreceptors that detect changes in the level of O2 in the airway lumen (Wang et al.,... [Pg.279]

After naphthalene (300 mg/kg i.p.) treatment of mice and epithelial repair, neuroepithelial bodies were significantly increased along the walls of the airways as well as on branch point ridges (Peake et al. 2000). Reynolds et al. (2000) provided the following evidence that the neuroepithelial body microenvironment serves as a source of airway progenitor cells that contribute for focal regeneration of the airway epithelium ... [Pg.187]

The mechanism of acute O2 sensing based on the regulation of membrane K" " channels seems to be a rather general phenomenon that has been shown to operate in other neurosecretory systems, such as the cells in the neuroepithelial bodies of the Ixmg (18), chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla (19), or PC 12 cells... [Pg.315]
