Most polymyxin B sold for human use in the United States is in dermatological, otic, and ophthalmic preparations that usually contain one or more other spectmm extending antibacterials such as bacitracin, neomycin sulfate [1404-04-2], C23H4gNg023, linear gramicidin, oxytetracycline [79-57-2],... 

Although tyrothricia is too toxic for parenteral therapy, it was formerly sold in the United States as oral lo2enges. Modem tyrothricin formulations are composed of 70—80% tyrocidines and 30—20% linear gramicidins. Tyrocidines are not as active as linear gramicidins and are too toxic for any therapeutic use by themselves. The bactericidal linear gramicidins are used in the United States solely as an ophthalmic solution in combination with polymyxin B sulfate and neomycin sulfate. The linear gramicidin is used in this aqueous product as a substitute for bacitracin, which lacks stabiUty under such conditions. 

Nystatin (100,000 lU) is also available in combination with neomycin sulfate [1405-10-3] (35,000 lU), polymyxin B sulfate [1405-20-5] (35,000 lU), acetarsol [97-44-9] (150 mg), and dimethicone [8050-81-5] (2,500 mg). One or two ovules per day are inserted vaginaHy for at least 6—12 days. This combination has an antibacterial, antimycotic, and antitrichomonas action (see also Antibiotics, oligosaccharides Antiparasitic agents, antiprotozoals). 

Co-administration of ofloxacin and chitosan in eyedrops increased the bioavailabUity of the antibiotic [290]. Trimethyl chitosan was more effective because of its solubility (plain chitosan precipitates at the pH of the tear fluid). On the other hand, N-carboxymethyl chitosan did not enhance the corneal permeability nevertheless it mediated zero-order ofloxacin absorption, leading to a time-constant effective antibiotic concentration [291]. Also W,0-carboxymethyl chitosan is suitable as an excipient in ophthalmic formulations to improve the retention and the bioavailability of drugs such as pilocarpine, timolol maleate, neomycin sulfate, and ephedrine. Most of the drugs are sensitive to pH, and the composition should have an acidic pH, to enhance stability of the drug. The delivery should be made through an anion exchange resin that adjusts the pH at around 7 [292]. Chitosan solutions do not lend themselves to thermal sterilization. A chitosan suspension, however.

Neomycin sulfate is given in a dose of 292 mg/m2 orally for infants as well as children for preoperative bowel sterilization. If it is given every four hours for three days, how many tablets of the available strength (350 mg/tablet) should be dispensed to a child with a body surface area of 1.2 m2 ... 

Similar well-shaped responses have been obtained at a gold electrode using the aminoglycoside neomycin (neomycin sulfate), which is a positively charged promoter favouring the electrostatic interaction with negatively charged proteins.36... 

Neomycin sulfate Many studies have documented lipid-lowering efficacy of neomycin. Alone, it reduced LDL cholesterol levels by 24%. Combined with niacin, it reduced LDL cholesterol levels to below the 90th percentile in 92% of patients.

Dissolve Lutrol F 127 and neomycin sulfate in water at 5-10°C. Mix both solutions. Maintain cool until the air bubbles disappeared. 

Dissolve the parabenes and Lutrol F 127 in water heated to about 80 °C, add the propylene glycol and dissolve neomycin sulfate. Cool to room temperature when the air bubbles escaped.
