Nauseating

Castor Oil. Castor oil [8001-79-4] (qv) is the fixed oil from the seeds of Picinus communis Linne. Pale yellowish or almost colorless, it is a transparent viscid Hquid with a faint, mild odor and a bland taste followed by a slightly acrid and usually nauseating taste. Its specific gravity is between 0.945 and 0.965. Castor oil is soluble in alcohol, and miscible with anhydrous alcohol, glacial acetic acid, chloroform, and diethyl ether. It consists chiefly of the glycerides of ricinoleic acid [141 -22-0], and isoricinoleic acid [73891-08-4], found in the small intestine. The seed contains a highly... [Pg.201]

By far the most important sulfide is CS2, a colourless, volatile, flammable liquid (mp — 111.6°, bp 46.25°, flash point —30°, autoignition temperature 100°, explosion limits in air 1.25 50%). Impure samples have a fetid almost nauseating stench due to organic impurities but the purified liquid has a rather pleasant ethereal smell it is very poisonous and can have disastrous effects on the nervous system and brain. CSt was formerly manufactured by direct reaction of S vapour and coke in He or steel retorts at 750 1000°C but, since the early 1950s, the preferred synthesis has been the catalysed reaction between sulfur and natural gas ... [Pg.317]

I ve never been sold on eggnog, to me a nauseating idea from its name on down to the nutmeg. The fact that you can buy it in supermarkets, in dairy cases, like a quart of brunch omelets, doesn t help. [Pg.18]

Monitoring and Managing Adverse Reactions OXYTOCIN When oxytocin is administered, some adverse reactions must be tolerated or treated symptomatically until therapy is discontinued. For example, if die patient is nauseated, die nurse provides an emesis basin and perhaps a cool towel for die forehead. If vomiting occurs, die nurse notifies die primary healtii care provider. [Pg.563]

One of the products of the reaction of sulfur with chlorine is disulfur dichloride, S2C12, a yellow liquid with a nauseating smell it is used for the vulcanization of rubber. When disulfur dichloride reacts with more chlorine in the presence of iron(III) chloride as a catalyst, the foul-smelling red liquid sulfur dichloride, SC12, is produced. Sulfur dichloride reacts with ethene to give mustard gas (16), which has been used in chemical warfare. Mustard gas causes blisters, discharges from the nose, and vomiting it also destroys the cornea of the eye. All in all, it is easy to see why ancient civilizations associated sulfur with the underworld. [Pg.759]

Occasionally, biotransformation in the absence of substantial biodegradation may be acceptable. Dicyclopentadiene is produced pyrolytically in petrochemical plants and has a nauseating and penetrating odor. Although it could be degraded by a mixed bacterial culture, the major part was transformed into a series of oxygenated compounds that were presumed to be less malodorous (Stehmeier et al. 1996 Shen et al. 1998). [Pg.640]

The same patient described in the first encounter is now 57 years old. He presents to the clinic with right upper quadrant pain radiating to his back. He is also jaundiced and nauseated. [Pg.343]

The flavor of elder bark is sweet at first and then becomes nauseatingly bitter. As a medicine, elder bark primarily affects the liver, kidneys, stomach and... [Pg.22]

It s a lot more complicated when C-2 of the acetyl-CoA is labeled. After the first turn of the cycle, this label ends up on the central carbons of oxaloacetate, and neither of these is lost during the second turn of the cycle. However, on the third turn of the cycle, half the label is lost because half the total label is on the carboxylates of oxaloacetate. On each subsequent turn of the cycle, half the remaining label is lost. The only way to sort this out for yourself is to sit down with the TCA cycle and go round and round. It s a dizzying experience that leaves you a little bit nauseated when it s over. [Pg.253]

Colorless hygroscopic liquid with a nauseating odor similar to ammonia and detectable at 0.011-0.04 ppm. This material is hazardous through inhalation, skin absorption, penetration through broken skin, and ingestion, and produces local skin/eye impacts. [Pg.68]

My health continued to deteriorate. When I tried to go shopping I got so nauseated I had to leave the store. I couldn t add numbers. I didn t know where to go or what to do. I still didn t know what was happening to me. Someone finally referred me to a doctor who told me I had a chemical injury and there were probably solvents in my bloodstream. I said, No, I don t think so. They told me at the hospital that I would be fine. ... [Pg.161]

Elixirs are clear oral solutions in which the vehicle is a hydroalcoholic mixture containing potent or nauseating drugs. Elixirs are pleasantly flavored and attractively colored. The presence of hydroalcoholic vehicle in an elixir makes it possible to include both water-soluble and alcohol-soluble substances in solution. In comparison to syrups, elixirs are less sweet and less viscous because of lower sugar content. From the manufacturing aspects and from the stability standpoint, elixirs are favored over syrups. [Pg.97]

If you breathe bromomethane, you may develop a headache and begin to feel weak and nauseated several hours later. If you breathe a large amount, fluid may build up in your lungs and it may be hard to breathe. You may have muscle tremors, and sometimes even seizures. Your kidneys may also be injured, and urine production may slow or stop. In severe cases, these effects can lead to death. In less serious cases, most of these effects usually disappear after several weeks, but some of the effects may never go away. [Pg.11]

Colorless, hygroscopic liquid with a nauseating, ammonia-like odor. Experimentally determined detection and recognition odor threshold concentrations were 50 pg/m (11 ppbv) and 190 pg/m (40 ppbv), respectively (Heilman and Small, 1974). [Pg.449]

Clear, colorless to pale yellow, flammable liquid with a sharp, penetrating, nauseating fish-like odor. Odor threshold concentrations in water and air were 2 ppm (Buttery et al., 1988) and 21 ppbv (Leonardos et al, 1969), respectively. Detection odor threshold concentrations of 0.74 mg/m (2.3 ppmv) and 6 mg/m (1.9 ppmv) were experimentally determined by Katz and Talbert (1930) and Dravnieks (1974), respectively. Cometto-Muniz and Cain (1990) reported an average nasal pungency threshold concentration of 1,275 ppmv. [Pg.995]

The nauseating odor of DBAE may provide adequate warning of overexposure, because it is unlikely that individuals would stay in badly contaminated areas for any length of time. ... [Pg.214]

An attempt by a laboratory worker to remove animals from an inhalation chamber containing approximately 100 ppm resulted in nausea and vomiting within 5 minutes after a fleeting exposure no irritation of the eyes or throat was noted during this brief exposure. Other persons in the same room also complained of a nauseating odor but showed no ill effects. [Pg.248]

IM administration - IM administration may be used as an alternative to the oral route for patients with less threatening arrhythmias but who are nauseated or vomiting, who are ordered to receive nothing by mouth preoperatively, or who may have malabsorptive problems. An initial daily dose of 50 mg/kg may be estimated. Divide this amount into fractional doses of 1/8 to % to be injected IM every 3 to 6 hours until oral therapy is possible. If more than 3 injections are given, assess patient factors such as age and renal function, clinical response and, if available, blood levels of procainamide and NAPA in adjusting further doses for that individual. For treatment of arrhythmias associated with... [Pg.429]

Eating one of the restricted foods may suddenly increase your blood pressure. If this occurs, you will get an explosive headache, particularly in the back of your head and in your temples. Your head and face will feel flushed and full, your heart may pound, and you may perspire heavily and feel nauseated. If this rare reaction occurs, do not lie down because this increases your blood pressure further. If your blood pressure is high, go to the nearest emergency center for evaluation and treattnent. Do not wait for a returned telephone call from our office. [Pg.52]

There were two reported cases with carbamazepine. One case was that of a 17-year-old female who reported increased levels of carbamazepine following three months of St. John s wort and carbamazepine 200 mg b.i.d. with a baseline level of 4.7pg/mL. She became nauseated with flu-like symptoms on 12/5/98. After experiencing a seizure, dizziness, and disorientation the next day, she was hospitalized with a carbamazepine level of 36pg/mL. [Pg.291]

While the 5-HT3 receptor is the most important in control of nausea and vomiting, others are also involved. 5-HT4 agonists have prokinetic properties in nauseated patients with gastroparesis and functional dyspepsia. The 5-HTlD-receptor agonists, such as sumatripan, are used in treatment of migraine and reduce emesis both in this condition and also in the cyclic vomiting syndrome, most likely via action on CNS sites. [Pg.192]
