The possible role of monoterpenes and diterpenes (resin acids) in decay and disease resistance is discussed in Sect. 9.2.2.1. That the presence of resin retards attack by decay fungi is evidenced by the durability of pine stumps and resinous knots. Whether this protection is afforded by the waterproofing nature of these compounds or as metabolic inhibitors is in question. The abnormal flow of resin (resinosis) is stimulated by wounds or pathogen attack. These materials may serve as a natural wound dressing to repel bark beetles and inhibit the growth of decay fungi. The role of the terpenes as protective agents deserves further study. [Pg.869]

A lot of natural as well as technological objects of analytical control are colloidal systems, i.e. human blood, biological liquids, sol and suspension forming in different technological processes (ore-dressing, electrochemical deposition, catalysis and other), food, paint-and-lacquer materials, sewage water and other. [Pg.137]

As we would expect the perfume is clearly composed around a classical structure of top, middle, and base notes. Apart from all the essential elements of a chypre there is the bold use of strong materials such as citronellal (1%), the aliphatic aldehydes (1%), styrallyl acetate (4%), and styrax in an accord that gives the perfume its enormous individuality. It was also part of Carles s technique to take structural materials such as vetiveryl acetate, methyl ionone, and hydroxycitronellal and dress them up with a number of natural and synthetic ma-... [Pg.125]

Canola oil is an natural salad oil. This means that it remains clear (no sedimentation) at refrigeration temperatures (3-5°C). No winterization or fractionation is required, except in some instances when, because of seed growing conditions, the oil may be contain waxes and traces of other high-melting material. These compounds may crystallize over time and create appearance problems in clear bottles. Experience has shown that only for the most demanding markets it is necessary to remove these compounds. They present no health hazard and are not sufficiently concentrated to affect emulsion stabihty when the oil is used in mayonnaises and other emulsified salad dressings. [Pg.742]

This group of dressings includes synthetic, semisynthetic, and naturally occurring products embracing a range of polysaccharide materials. [Pg.1031]

This xerogel is a polymer of the polysaccharide dex-tran, a naturally derived polymer of glucose produced by cultures of a micro-organism, Leuconostoc mesen-teroides. The gel is formed when the dextran molecules comprising the disperse phase of the hydrocolloid are cross-linked by a chemical process utilizing epichloro-hydrin and sodium hydroxide. Dextranomer is available as beads or paste. The material requires a secondary dressing. [Pg.1031]

In nuclear power stations electrical current is produced from nuclear energy. Efficient operation requires provision of the nuclear power station with fuel elements and the disposal of spent materials. These operations are brought together in the nuclear fuel cycle, which embraces on the provision side the extraction and dressing of uranium ores to uranium concentrates, their conversion to uranium(VI) fluoride, enrichment of the uranium isotope from 0.7% in natural uranium to ca. 3%, the conversion of uranium(VI) fluoride into nuclear fuel and the production of fuel elements. [Pg.591]
