If an ethyl ether fire occurs, carbon dioxide, carbon tetrachloride, and dry chemical fire extinguishers meeting National Fire Prevention Association Code 1 and 2 requirements may be used successfully (23). Water may also be effectively applied (see Plant SAFETY). Hose streams played into open tanks of burning ethyl ether serve only to scatter the liquid and spread the fire. However, ether fires may be extinguished by a high pressure water spray that cools the burning surface and smothers the fire. Automatic sprinklers and deluge systems are also effective. [Pg.428]

Beyond performance optimization, issues relative to packaging and the need for compliance with certain safety and electronics regulatory codes are cited as reasons for a customized solution. In the latter case, a systems approach is required, especially when attempting to meet the code or performance requirements for compliance with European Certification (CE) mark or electrical and fire safety codes such as National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) and ATEX (replaces the old Cenelec requirements). Off-the-shelf electronics may provide the necessary performance characteristics for generic applications, and their use eliminates large expenses related to product development, plus the associated time delays. Photonics-related components are solely addressed in this section because they are used to customize instruments for application-specific systems. [Pg.108]

Chemical hazard pictorial Several different pictorials are used on labels to indicate the level of a chemical hazard. The most common is the "fire diamond NFPA (National Fire Prevention Association) pictorial shown at left. A zero indicates a minimal hazard and a four indicates a severe risk. Special information includes if the chemical reacts with water, OX for an oxidizer, COR ACID for a corrosive acid, and COR ALK for a corrosive base. The "Flealth" hazard level is for acute toxicity only. [Pg.42]

OSHA requires all chemical manufacturers to label hazardous substances with specific types of information. Many companies use either the National Fire Prevention Association (NFRA) format or the Hazardous Materials Information Systems (HMIS) format. An example of each logo is shown below. The logos use the same color and number designations, but slightly different ways of presenting them. A zero indicates that no hazard exists, while a 4 indicates an extreme hazard. Always look for hazard labels on bottles of chemicals before you use the chemicals. [Pg.915]

National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) http //www.nfpa.org/ (accessed June 22,2010). The NFPA develops safety codes and standards, such as the Fire Prevention Code, that influence buildings, processes, services, and design. [Pg.195]
