Fire prevention codes

These codes are concerned with safety regulations that relate to fire protection equipment, maintenance of building and premises, hazardous materials, processes, and machinery used in buildings. They are normally issued by authorities like Building Officials and Code Administration International, Inc. (BOCA) or the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). It is important to check with the state fire marshal or other authorities to know which codes are applicable to your area.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) NFPA is non-profit organization that publishes the National Electrical Code , the Life Safety Code , the Fire Prevention Code , the National Fuel Gas Code , and the National Fire Alarm Code . The mission of NFPA is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by providing and advocating scientifically based consensus codes and standards, research, training, and education. NFPA is developing a fuel cell specific code, NFPA 853, which will cover the installation of stationary fuel cells of at least 50 kW output. Publication is expected to occur in 2000. 

The International Code Council (ICC) was formed by the consolidation of three formerly separate fire code organizations International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO), which had published the Uniform Fire Code under its fire service arm, the International Fire Code Institute (IFCI) Building Officials and Code Administrators (BOCA), which had published the National Fire Prevention Code and Southern Building Congress Code International (SBCCI), which had published the Standard Fire Prevention Code. When the three groups merged in 2000, in part to develop a common fire code, the individual codes became obsolete however, they are noted above since references to them may periodically surface. The consolidated code is IFC-2006, International Fire Code. 

Fire prevention code or ordinance A law enacted in a political jurisdiction for the purpose of enforcing fire prevention and safety regulations. 

The new Uniform Fire Code (NFPA l)124 is a blend of two documents, the NFPA Fire Prevention Code (also known as NFPA 1) and the Uniform Fire Code previously issued by the Western Fire Chiefs, which was a partner of ICBO, when ICBO issued the UBC. The 2009 edition consists of 73 chapters, although several of them are reserved for future use.
