Cylinders changing

The time the plant is down for a cylinder change may be reduced, and cylinder life increased, if the cylinder with worn packings is removed from the compressor in its entirety and replaced with one which has been assembled with care in a clean environment. Alternatively, with some designs it is possible to replace the packing cups and valve assembly as a complete cartridge.

More flexibility can be obtained with a variable volume clearance pocket such as that shown in Figure 11-20. This is a plug built into the outer cylinder head. When moved, the clearance volume of the outer end of the cylinder changes.

Sometimes it is important to know how the temperature or concentration at the center of the cylinder changes with time. LC-grade solvents are normally used as modifiers. The modifier can be added directly into the extraction cell prior to extraction. In this case no additional pump is needed. A disadvantage is that the entire volume of modifier is extracted together with the analytes dming the dynamic mode of the extraction. Using premixed cylinders is another option. A range of mixtures of carbon dioxide with various modifiers added (1-10%) are commercially available. There are severe drawbacks of premixed cyfinders as there is less flexibility in the choice of the solvent used, and the composition of the liquid supplied from mixed cylinders changes over the lifetime of the gas mixture. The shape of radial dependence of the adhesion forces shown in Figure 1.92 for nanosilica in the aqueous medium differs significantly from similar dependences measured directly as forces between two crossed cylinders (Claesson et al. 1995, Atkins et al. 1997, Spalla and Kekicheff 1997). The last level of protection for hazardous gases is PPE. For short-term maintenance operations and cylinder changes, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is used. For long-term maintenance activities, an air-line cart attached to an SCBA is used. At least two people must be present—buddy system— with both wearing SCBA. 

Be sure to indicate, on or near each regulator in your system, the pressure that the regulator should be reset to after a cylinder change—you might not always be present when a cylinder is emptied and replaced. 

Stable over extended periods. Ideally you would want a standard that could be used for months or years on end. Because the addition of an internal standard to samples serves to correct for instrument performance variation, the use of an internal standard in the control standard can effectively mask many instrumental performance problems and defeat the effectiveness of statistical process control. The control standard should therefore not contain any internal standard. Each time the control standard is analyzed, its result should be added to the control chart, and the result analyzed within the context of previous analyses of that control standard. All pertinent data should be recorded in the instrument logbook. This would include gas cylinder changes, septum changes, all maintenance, column changes, and flowrate adjustments.
