Phenelzine Sulfate, U5P. Phenelzine sulfate, 2-(phe-nylethyl)hydra/ine sulfate (Nardil), is an effective antidc-pre.ssant agent. A mechanism-based inactivator, it irreversibly inactivates the enzyme or its cofactor. pre.sumably after oxidation to the diazine, which can then bre up into molecular nitrogen, a hydrogen alum, and a phenethyl free radical. The latter would be the active species in irreversible inhibition. ... [Pg.515]

PSYCHOTROPIC, and also a veterinary immobilizing agent. It is a drug of abuse, largely withdrawn from human clinical use. phencyclidine hydrochloride phencyclidine, phenelzine [ban, inn] (phenelzine sulfate [usan] Nardil ) is one of the hydrazine class and is an irreversible MONOAMINE-OXIDASE INHIBITOR (MAOl active against both A and 6) used as an ANTIDEPRESSANT. [Pg.218]

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) Neurotransmitters norepinephrine, dopamine, epinephrine, and serotonin are inactive by the enzyme monoamine oxidase. MAOI inhibits monoamine oxidase, resulting in a rise in the levels of these neurotransmitters. MAOI are isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine sulfate (Nardil), and tranylcypromine sulfate (Parnate). [Pg.239]

Antidepressants are divided into the following classes the dibenzapine derivatives are called tricyclic antidepressants and include imipramine (Tofranil), desipramine (Norpramin), amitriptyline (Elavil), nortriptyline (Aventyl), protriptyline (Vivactil), and doxepin (Adapin). The monoamine oxidase inhibitors are nsed occasionally to treat depression. The hydrazine derivatives consist of isocarboxazid (Marplan) and phenelzine sulfate (Nardil). The nonhydrazine derivatives inclnde tranylcypromine (Parnate). L-Tryptophan is the only member of the monoamine precnrsors nsed to treat depression. The newer and second-generation antidepressants inclnde amoxapine, doxepin, flnoxetine, maprotiline, trazodone, mianserin, alprazolam, and bnpropion (see also Tables 5 throngh 7). [Pg.197]

The monoamine oxidase inhibitors are used occasionally to treat depression. The hydrazine derivatives consist of isocarboxazid (Marplan) and phenelzine sulfate (Nardil). The nonhydrazine derivatives include tranylcypromine (Parnate). [Pg.467]

Monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) antidepressants have been in use for nearly 40 years. At the present time, they are viewed as second- or third-line antidepressant medications for reasons of both efficacy and safety. The available MAOIs are phenelzine sulfate (Nardil), isocarboxazid (Marplan), and tranylcypromine sulfate (Parnate). Two additional MAOI antidepressants, moclobemide and brofaromine, are approved for use in Europe and/or Canada. [Pg.468]

Certain t) es of foods can adversely effect the dmg s therapeutic effect by increasing absorption, delaying absorption, and even preventing absorption of the medication. Furthermore, food may cause the patient to experience an adverse reaction as in the case with phenelzine sulfate (Nardil), which is an MAO monoamineoxidase inhibitor anti-depressant. Nardil caimot be given with foods that use bacteria or molds in their preparation or for preservation of those that contain tyramine, such as cheese, sour cream, beer, wine, figs, raisins, bananas, avocados, etc. The nurse must assess if the dmg has a contraindication with food and educate the patient about this food-dmg interaction. [Pg.110]
